In Tan An village, My Quang commune, Phu My district (Binh Dinh province), Mr. Nguyen Chi Tam, who has decades of experience growing watermelons, is clearing the fields and preparing the land to plant watermelons for the Summer-Autumn crop.
Although busy, Mr. Tam still happily shared: At the end of January this year, I planted 1 hectare of super sweet watermelon, and after more than 2 months, I started harvesting.
Thanks to favorable weather and good care, melon plants grow and develop quickly, have few pests and diseases, and produce a lot of fruit, each fruit weighing 2.5 - 3 kg.
This watermelon crop, my family's watermelon yield reached 30 tons/ha, an increase of more than 10 tons compared to the same period. The selling price was also always maintained at 5,000 VND/kg, double the same period.
With the above output and selling price, after deducting expenses, my family makes a profit of about 80 million VND/ha. Compared to rice cultivation, super sweet watermelon is more effective.

Mr. Tran Dinh Van, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of My Quang Commune, Phu My District (Binh Dinh Province) said that this winter-spring crop, My Quang Commune only has 10 households growing super sweet watermelon varieties with an area of about 10 hectares.
The reason for the decrease in watermelon acreage is that last winter-spring crop, chili prices were high, so farmers devoted more acreage to growing chili. Currently, hundreds of farming households in the commune are focusing on preparing land to grow watermelon for the summer-autumn crop.
According to Mr. Thai Binh Minh, Vice Chairman of My Phong Commune People's Committee: Although the Winter-Spring crop is not the main crop, the entire My Phong commune grows 45 hectares of watermelon, concentrated in the villages of Van Truong, Gia Hoi, Vinh An, Phu Quang and Phu Duc.
Like other localities, this season, melon growers in My Phong had a good harvest and stable prices. After the melons were harvested, traders came to the fields or homes to buy them. The melons had a good harvest and good prices, so all melon growers were happy. This was the motivation for farmers to invest in growing melons in the Summer-Autumn season.
