Since the beginning of last year, Ms. Nong Thi Ch., 54 years old (Bao Lam district, Cao Bang province) has had convulsions on one side of her body, accompanied by memory loss, not remembering what she was about to do. Her family was confused, thinking that she was "possessed by a ghost", so they invited a shaman to exorcise the evil spirit but to no avail.
Recently, Ms. Ch. decided to go to K Hospital (Hanoi) for examination. Here, she was prescribed an X-ray and an electroencephalogram, which discovered a lesion in the left temporal region of the brain. This was the cause of her seizures and memory loss.
"My house is haunted, I don't think my wife can cure this ghost, but the doctor explained the illness and encouraged her to have surgery to cure the illness, so I can only rely on medicine and doctors," patient Ch.'s husband shared.
After consultation, the doctors determined that this was a complicated surgery because the hemangioma-like tumor was located next to the patient's speech and memory areas. The choice of treatment strategy was also carefully calculated to ensure the removal of the tumor and the epileptic area while still preserving the functional areas for pronunciation, language comprehension, and memory.
Neurosurgeons performed microsurgery to remove the tumor, and applied electroencephalography during surgery to determine the area causing seizures (epilepsy) in order to remove the area causing epilepsy in the patient.
After 4 hours of surgery, the operation was successful, the patient was awake, and language and memory functions were fully preserved.
Dr. Nguyen Duc Lien, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, K Hospital, said that adults with seizures need to have an MRI scan of the brain to rule out causes in the brain.
In Ms. Ch's case, it was determined that the seizures had a cause, and the lesions were clearly localized. Therefore, removing the entire tumor and the area causing the seizures helped the patient recover from the seizures.
The result after surgery was a hemangioma in the brain, a benign tumor. The patient did not need additional treatment, only needed to maintain anti-epileptic drugs for about 1-2 years.
Ms. Ch. was quite lucky because the tumor was determined to be benign and the surgery was successful. If she had not come for examination and treatment early, her health and quality of life would have been greatly affected.
This story is also a warning bell for everyone when there are unusual signs, they need to go to a specialist facility for timely examination and treatment.
At K Hospital, during the examination and treatment process, doctors still recorded some cases of gullibility and superstition that strange symptoms of the body were caused by "ghosts", and that medicine could not cure the disease. Therefore, they did not go to the doctor, missing the golden time of the treatment process, leaving behind unfortunate consequences.
In which, many cases come to the hospital when the disease has progressed, the treatment effect cannot be as positive as before.
