Earlier, a high-level delegation from the Cook Islands visited Shanghai and Shandong.

Spokesperson Guo Jiakun further noted that the Cook Islands is China's cooperative partner in the South Pacific. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries have always respected each other, treated each other equally, and sought common development.

Noting that the two countries upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2018, Guo Jiakun affirmed, “our friendly cooperation is rooted in mutual support and brings practical benefits to both peoples.”

Through Prime Minister Mark Brown's visit, “China is willing to exchange in-depth views with the Cook Islands” on “efforts to achieve new progress in bilateral relations”.

According to the website of the Cook Islands Prime Minister's Office, this is the first state visit by a prime minister of the country to China in the past decade and opens up opportunities to enhance cooperation in many important areas.

In a statement published on his website yesterday, February 12, Prime Minister Mark Brown said his discussions in China “opened the door to new areas of cooperation”, including expanding the Cook Islands’ marine research capabilities through partnerships with the China Ocean Sample Repository and the National Deep Sea Centre in Qingdao, Shandong province.

The partnership also includes “exploring aquaculture opportunities” as well as strengthening “national climate resilience efforts, particularly in weather forecasting and climate change adaptation, through collaboration with global experts.”

In an interview with the Global Times , Chen Hong, executive director at the Center for Asia-Pacific Studies at East China Normal University, said that the expanding cooperation between China and the Cook Islands in addressing climate change, agriculture and fisheries will contribute to the strong economic development of the South Pacific nation and provide a significant impetus to improving people's livelihoods.

According to this expert, this bilateral cooperation is a microcosm of cooperation between China and Pacific island countries, which is beneficial to bilateral relations and regional prosperity.
