At a regular press conference on February 13, in response to a question from Anadolu Agency about China's comments on this new move, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said that Beijing supports increased communication between Russia and the United States on global issues and reaffirmed that dialogue is the only viable solution to the Ukraine crisis.

Guo Jiakun also reiterated that “a day after the conflict broke out, President Xi Jinping proposed finding a political solution through dialogue.” Beijing “supports all efforts that are conducive to the peaceful resolution of the crisis and will maintain communication with relevant parties and play a constructive role in promoting a political solution.”

Earlier, President Trump described his conversation with his counterpart Putin as “lengthy and highly productive,” claiming that the two sides agreed to “begin negotiations immediately” to end the nearly three-year conflict in Ukraine.

The White House boss also held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and then proposed his first meeting with Mr. Putin in Saudi Arabia to negotiate peace on Ukraine.

Meanwhile, according to a Wall Street Journal report, Chinese officials have proposed holding a summit between the Russian and US presidents as part of a peacekeeping effort to end the conflict in Ukraine.

Reuters asked the Chinese Foreign Ministry for a response to the report and whether Beijing had any role in the meeting and whether it was considering holding it in Beijing. Spokesperson Guo Jiakun declined to comment.
