Sugarcane farmers in localities in the province are entering the 2024-2025 sugarcane harvest season. This year, sugarcane continues to be purchased at high prices, so farmers are excited and confident in expanding their planting area.
Sugarcane purchased at high price
After the Lunar New Year holidays, from January 6, sugarcane farmers in the localities returned to harvesting sugarcane to sell to factories and traders. According to records in the growing areas, this year's sugarcane crop, thanks to favorable weather, many sugarcane areas achieved quite high yields, from 70 tons/ha or more. Some sugarcane areas with the first year's remaining roots, using drip irrigation technology, still achieved a yield of nearly 90 tons/ha.
Not only achieving stable productivity, sugarcane is also currently purchased by sugar factories in the province at high prices. If last year's crop, raw sugarcane with 10 CCS was purchased at 1.3 million VND/ton, this crop's price is 1.35 million VND/ton. Raw sugarcane with more than 10 CCS will be priced higher according to the coefficient.
Having just finished harvesting more than 4 hectares of sugarcane fields of his family, Mr. Le Trung Quan in Ea Ly commune (Song Hinh district) said: Because the sugarcane fields are cared for, fertilized, and protected from pests and diseases according to the instructions of Tuy Hoa Sugarcane Joint Stock Company, even though it is the third year of sugarcane stubble, the sugarcane still grows well and has a stable sugar content. This year, the sugarcane purchase price is high, and the company supports a machine to load sugarcane onto the truck at a cost 50% lower than the cost of hiring workers to load it onto the truck. Thanks to that, we are all excited because we have a high income to cover expenses and reinvest in the new crop.
Sharing the joy of sugarcane, Mr. Y Luc in Suoi Bac commune (Son Hoa district) shared: This year, I planted more than 2 hectares of sugarcane, with a yield of more than 75 tons/ha, an increase of 10% compared to last year. The harvested sugarcane reached 10 sugar content, so it was purchased at the field for 1.35 million VND/ton and for every 0.1 CCS increase, an additional 12,500 VND was paid. After deducting the cost of fertilizer and care, my family earned a profit of more than 100 million VND.
Help farmers feel secure in growing sugarcane
In Son Hoa district, in recent years, with investment policies and support from sugar companies and local authorities, people have boldly applied new farming methods and techniques to grow high-yielding sugarcane varieties such as: KK3, KK88-92, K83-29...
Mr. Le Van Quy, Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Hoa district, said: The district is focusing on supporting people to continue expanding the sugarcane growing area in suitable areas, ensuring both productivity and convenient harvesting; at the same time, connecting with sugar factories so that people can rest assured about the output. Currently, some growing areas are entering the sugarcane harvest season, with high purchase prices (1,200-1,350 VND/kg). It is estimated that this year, sugarcane farmers in the district will have an income of 55-70 million VND/ha.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in recent years, people in localities in the province have maintained a stable sugarcane growing area of 24,000-26,000 hectares/year, this year alone, more than 29,000 hectares have been planted, due to stable sugarcane productivity, sugarcane prices being higher year after year, so many households have expanded their growing area. In addition, local sugarcane purchasing factories also focus on connecting with people to ensure post-harvest output. Some households have also received advances from factories to cover investment costs, expand production areas and train in new farming techniques.
A representative of KCP Vietnam Industrial Company Limited said that the company currently purchases raw sugarcane at a price of 1.35 million VND/ton for sugarcane with 10 sugar content, and if the sugarcane reaches 11 sugar content, farmers will be paid an additional 125,000 VND/ton. The company lends people more than 500 billion VND in interest-free loans to plant sugarcane on an area of 7,000 hectares. In addition, the company spends about 60 billion VND annually to help people with land preparation for sugarcane planting.
Meanwhile, the leader of Tuy Hoa Sugarcane Joint Stock Company shared that the company is purchasing raw sugarcane from local people. To reassure farmers about growing sugarcane, this year the company has signed investment contracts and directly purchased nearly 2,000 sugarcane-growing households, with a total investment in the company's raw material area of nearly 100 billion VND. In the upcoming 2025-2026 sugarcane crop, the company will continue to introduce many investment policies and support the development of sugarcane raw material areas, including: land preparation costs, seed and fertilizer purchases, cultivation techniques, transit fees, contract completion bonuses, and incentives for increased output.
In addition, the company also insures the sugarcane purchase price for households at VND900,000/ton of clean sugarcane with 10% sugar content in the field. Thanks to this, many farmers have long-term cooperation with the company in the production - consumption chain, gradually increasing the value of products and increasing income for people.
