Meo Vac district has a natural area of 57,668.61 hectares, including 18 administrative units at commune and town levels, with 17 ethnic groups living together, of which ethnic minorities account for 97.64% of the district's population.
Located at an altitude of more than 1,000m above sea level, the terrain is mainly limestone mountains with steep slopes, so when it rains, the water cannot be retained on the surface. Therefore, the lives of people in the mountainous district of Meo Vac in the dry season (from October of the previous year to May of the following year) in previous years, encountered many difficulties due to lack of domestic water.
With 597 million VND allocated to implement the decentralized domestic water support program for people, Ta Lung commune has so far disbursed 308 million VND, supporting 103 households. During the implementation process, Ta Lung commune organized community meetings to inform and discuss the criteria for selecting households to benefit from the program to ensure publicity and transparency. Through that, the commune government also grasped the thoughts and aspirations of the people, so when implementing, it received high consensus and agreement from the people.
Mr. Giang Mi Sinh, a resident of Ta Lung commune, said: “Although there is a hanging pond near our house, my family did not have any means to store water before, so we had to carry cans of water every day, which was very inconvenient. Since we were supported with a 1,500-liter stainless steel water tank, our lives have become less difficult. People are very excited to receive practical support from the State.”
As of June 2024, from the capital of the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas for the period 2021 - 2030, Phase I: From 2021 to 2025, the Ethnic Minorities Department of Meo Vac District has advised the District People's Committee to issue documents guiding the implementation of support for 2,107 poor households in need of domestic water support, with a total cost of over 6.3 billion VND. Of which, 1,948 households were supported with stainless steel water tanks, 142 households built water tanks and 17 households installed self-flowing pipes.
Up to now, Meo Vac district has completed support for 636 households, with a budget of nearly 2 billion VND. The remaining households eligible for the policy are currently being bid by communes to purchase materials according to regulations.
In addition, Meo Vac district also allocated capital from the National Target Programs to build 5 centralized domestic water supply works in 4 communes, serving more than 200 households with a total capital of over 11.4 billion VND.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Nong Van Ngay, Head of the Ethnic Affairs Department of Meo Vac district shared: "Thanks to the timely and effective implementation of the domestic water support program (Project 1, National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas), many ethnic minority people in the district have had access to clean, hygienic water, thereby ensuring their health and improving their quality of life."
