Reasons for hip pain during exercise

VnExpressVnExpress27/10/2023

People with arthritis, bursitis, and muscle strains may experience hip pain when running.

The hip joint is the connection point between the leg and the torso, supporting the body's weight and allowing movement. Common culprits for hip discomfort include direct trauma or other medical conditions.

Muscle tension

Muscle strains occur when a muscle is overstretched or torn. In runners, these injuries are common in the hip and groin area due to fatigue, overuse, improper muscle use, and failure to warm up before exercise.

In addition to hip pain, muscle strains can also affect the lower back, causing pain around the buttocks. People with muscle strains can apply the RICE method (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) and take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications. To prevent this, do not increase your total weekly mileage by more than 10% per week.

Hip bursitis

Bursae are small fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction between tendons and bones. When these sacs accumulate too much fluid, they become inflamed and painful. Hip bursitis occurs during repetitive activities such as running.

Common symptoms include pain when touching the hip and difficulty sleeping on the injured side. Ice packs, over-the-counter pain relievers, and physical therapy can help relieve pain.

Acetabular rim cartilage tear

The labrum serves as a cushion in the hip joint and acts like a rubber band to hold the femoral head in place in the acetabular socket. Labrum tears can be caused by trauma, abnormal joint structure, or repetitive motion.

A torn acetabular rim cartilage causes hip or groin pain that is worse when standing, sitting, or walking. The condition also causes a grinding or clicking sensation when moving the hip joint. Patients should rest properly or take over-the-counter pain relievers and do physical therapy exercises.

Hip arthritis

Hip osteoarthritis is a common cause of hip pain. It occurs when the protective cartilage in the hip socket wears away over time. This exposes the bone, making movement painful. This condition can be treated with hip-strengthening exercises. In severe cases, hip replacement surgery may be needed.

Iliotibial band syndrome

The iliotibial band helps stabilize the hip and knee. Iliotibial band syndrome occurs when the ligament is overused or the leg is not strong enough to handle the force of running too quickly. This injury is common in runners and causes pain along the outside of the knee, near the hip. This symptom may increase when running up and down hills or standing up from a sitting position.

The best way to relieve the pain is to rest for at least a week. People with this syndrome should do stretching exercises several times a day and strengthening exercises for the hip.
