Regarding the controversial literature test, Ms. Tran Thi Bich Chau - head of the literature department at Mac Dinh Chi High School, District 6, Ho Chi Minh City, said that it was a mid-term literature test for students of class 10A25 of the school, not for all grade 10 students.
The test is "Write an essay discussing the promiscuous lifestyle of today's youth", the test duration is 45 minutes.
"This is a periodic test conducted by class unit, the test questions are given by subject teachers according to the consensus of the professional group (Ms. Chau does not directly teach literature in class 10A25 - PV) .
The requirement of the topic is to write an essay discussing an issue (a phenomenon in life or an issue related to young people); the topic does not use materials but is a type of essay using arguments and evidence to discuss and clarify a social issue," said Ms. Chau.
According to Ms. Chau, the purpose is to ensure the content of the 10th grade literature program. Regarding the 45-minute test duration, she said that students have been instructed to recognize the requirements of a social argumentative essay on a social issue. They have also been instructed to practice applying argumentative operations in writing in accordance with the required time.
In addition, students are also guided on how to express themselves concisely, present clearly, and provide appropriate arguments and evidence according to the requirements of the topic.
Regarding the content of knowledge, the teacher guided students to state the practical significance of the issues, including the issue of "canvas" lifestyle. Specifically, in the writing class, the teacher let students practice writing skills and present the social issues that had been studied.
During the speaking and listening lesson, the teacher also guided students to present in groups and gave comments to help students: Correctly perceive the problem, have appropriate attitudes and solutions; Express the writer's awareness and stance on right/wrong, good/bad expressions...; Know how to promote strengths, overcome weaknesses in the way of perceiving social issues; Have an objective view, towards positive and good things in life...
"10th grade students at Mac Dinh Chi School also learn the topic 'Building a life perspective' from the experiential and career orientation activities. This topic also contributes to supplementing social knowledge for students to write argumentative essays," Ms. Chau added.
The question needs to be clarified as to what 'tarpaulin' is.
On October 29, social networks spread the mid-term 1 literature exam for 10th grade students of Mac Dinh Chi High School, District 6, Ho Chi Minh City.
Accordingly, the mid-term first-semester literature exam for 10th grade students in the 2024-2025 school year of the school only has one question: "Write an essay discussing the promiscuous lifestyle of today's youth."
On social networks, many people praised the above essay as being very good, catching the "hot trend" of young people.
However, experts have mixed opinions. Some teachers believe that "backdrop" is a colloquial language, in which case students must understand it figuratively and not literally.
In reality, not all students understand that the "fake" lifestyle is used to refer to a "pretentious" way of living, being dishonest, deceitful... Therefore, the exam needs to explain to students clearly what "fake" is in order to achieve the criteria of clear content, helping students not to misunderstand the exam.
