On February 7, at Nhon Ly commune (Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh), Quy Nhon City People's Committee coordinated with the Department of Culture and Sports to organize a ceremony to receive the certificate of national intangible cultural heritage of the Xuong Ly lagoon fishing festival.

The Xuong Ly lagoon fishing festival in Nhon Ly commune is closely associated with the spiritual life and beliefs of local coastal residents who worship whales (whale, Nam Hai god - the guardian god of fishermen), not only to pray for favorable weather and a full hold of fish and shrimp, but also to demonstrate the spirit of solidarity and community cohesion through many generations.

With a history of more than 200 years, this festival has witnessed and accompanied the ups and downs of Nhon Ly land from the early days of Truong Lang in 1815, until it was officially held at Vung Nom (Xuong Ly lagoon) in 1839. After many reconstructions, especially after 2014, the Xuong Ly lagoon fishing festival was fully restored, becoming a unique cultural beauty of the locality in particular, and Binh Dinh province in general.

With its unique cultural values, the Xuong Ly Van Dam Fishing Festival was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a national intangible cultural heritage in Decision No. 3994/QD-BVHTTDL dated December 10, 2024.

This is the 6th national intangible cultural heritage of Binh Dinh province to be honored, following the heritages: Binh Dinh traditional martial arts, Binh Dinh opera, Binh Dinh folk art of Bai Choi, Ba Pagoda Festival - Nuoc Man Port, Phu Gia horse hat making craft.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tu Cong Hoang - Vice Chairman of Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee, the recognition of the Xuong Ly Van Dam Fishing Festival as a national intangible cultural heritage is not only a source of pride for local people but also a testament to the richness and diversity of the national cultural treasure of Binh Dinh. This is also an important milestone, opening up new opportunities for this heritage to continue to be preserved, promoted and spread more strongly.
