The decision to fire Mr. Jurgen Klinsmann was approved by the Korea Football Association (KFA) at a meeting today (February 16).
“Coach Klinsmann failed to meet our expectations in terms of match management, player management and work attitude. He could not help the Korean team improve its level and competitiveness,” said KFA President Chung Mong-gyu.
Coach Klinsmann was fired after failure at the Asian Cup.
On his personal page, coach Klinsmann also sent a farewell letter to the Korean team: "I want to thank the players, coaching staff and all Korean fans. Thank you for your support over the past time. The Korean team has had a great journey over the past 12 months with 13 unbeaten matches before the Asian Cup semi-finals. Let's keep fighting ."
The day before, the National Team Committee, the KFA's advisory body, had recommended Klinsmann's dismissal. Even KFA Technical Director Hwangbo Kwan said that Klinsmann "had too many problems" during his tenure with the Korean national team.
The 0-2 defeat to underdog Jordan in the Asian Cup semi-finals and the scandal between Lee Kang-in and Son Heung-min were the last straw that caused Klinsmann to lose his job. Many Korean fans also lost patience with the German strategist, so they gathered and protested, demanding that the KFA quickly fire the national team's head coach.
According to Money Today, the Korea Football Association (KFA) will have to pay up to 10 billion won (equivalent to 183 billion VND) in compensation when deciding to fire coach Jurgen Klinsmann. This compensation includes salary for more than 2 years remaining in coach Klinsmann's contract and penalties according to other terms.
Mr. Klinsmann took the job in Korea in March 2023, replacing his predecessor Paulo Bento. The former player did not help the Korean team improve much in terms of skills. The victories of Son Heung-min and his teammates mainly came from matches against weaker opponents.
