The meeting was chaired by Mr. Chung Hae-sung - a familiar face in Vietnamese football, having left many impressions in his roles as Technical Director of HAGL Club and Head Coach of Ho Chi Minh City Club from 2018 to 2020. On February 20, Mr. Chung Hae-sung was elected as Chairman of the Committee to Strengthen the Korean National Team.
With the Korean team having two upcoming matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Thailand (March 21 and 26), the Korea Football Association (KFA) does not have much time left to find a replacement for coach Jurgen Klinsmann. Time is pressing, so experts predict that the KFA will find an interim coach. By the end of 2024, signing a permanent coach will be considered. However, Mr. Chung Hae-sung said that most members of the Strength Enhancement Committee do not agree with an interim coach.
“Many media outlets believe that we want to sign an interim coach, delaying negotiations with a coach for a long time is not true. The upcoming period is important and the results can greatly affect the journey as well as the mentality of the Korean team.
In March, the Korean team only had 2 matches but that was a huge pressure for the new coach. It is very difficult for an interim coach to face these things. Therefore, the KFA assessed that all doors are towards a permanent coach.
After the incident with coach Jurgen Klinsmann, KFA is considering both foreign and domestic coaches. However, the Strengthening Committee will carefully examine and require candidates to meet 8 criteria including: Tactics, ability to develop young players, achievements, experience, communication skills, leadership skills, having a good assistant team with many modern coaching methods and finally the ability to meet high expectations.
“The new coach must meet those eight criteria. Having achievements with the Korean team is our highest goal,” Mr. Chung Hae-sung emphasized.
In response to Chung Hae-sung’s statements, Korean fans are having mixed reactions. On February 21, OSEN conducted a survey on the new coach and surprisingly, former coach of the Vietnamese national team - Park Hang-seo received more than 80% of the votes.
OSEN explained: “The Korean team has just been torn apart by a “civil war” and needs the leadership of Coach Park Hang-seo. Coach Park has united the Vietnamese players with his leadership. He also does not hesitate to harshly scold players who break the rules or do something wrong.
In particular, Mr. Park Hang-seo was a member of the coaching staff of the Korean team at the 2002 World Cup. Mr. Jeong Hae-seong, Chairman of the Power Enhancement Committee, can also closely communicate with Coach Park Hang-seo. If Coach Park Hang-seo takes on the position of interim coach, members of the 2002 team, including former Seongnam coach Kim Nam-il, can also support."
The KFA is also approaching coaches working in the K-League such as Hong Myung-bo, Kim Hak-beom, Kim Ki-dong. However, negotiations are facing many problems as Korean teams are not willing to release their players.
