The winding roads, small alleys surrounding each three-room house from the 70s and 80s, the colorful mural walls, the gentle, friendly smiles of the people of Nhon Ly fishing village (Binh Dinh)... make people feel both simple and relaxed, and also feel new but also carry a bit of nostalgia for old times.

Stroll around the winding alleys

Coming to Binh Dinh in the days of July, the sun and wind of the sea were so "burning" that we hesitated a bit, but after about 30 minutes of traveling from the center of Quy Nhon city to Nhon Ly commune, standing outside the welcome gate, looking far away, encompassing the entire scene, the small fishing village was covered by a vast, immense blue of the ocean, creating an extremely peaceful, poetic scene that made us extremely impressed.

Nhon Ly fishing village is a coastal fishing village in Nhon Ly commune, Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province - this place used to be a poor fishing village, little known with an area of about 1.4 hectares, mostly covered by rolling hills and white sand.

However, thanks to its perfect natural scenery, today the fishing village has become a famous tourist destination, attracting visitors every time they visit Binh Dinh.

In Nhon Ly fishing village, Quy Nhon city (Binh Dinh province), you will not see the image of flat asphalt roads, instead there are winding roads, winding uphill and downhill embracing the terrain of the central coastal region.

Mr. Dan (61 years old) - a resident of the fishing village said that these winding roads were built by the people to limit the wind from the sea and to create shade to combat the sweltering heat of the land and sky.

Many young people are attracted by the simple, rustic features of Nhon Ly fishing village.

Walking around the fishing village, we realized that the terrain here is really special. From the foot of the village, we climb up the hill and then go down again. Sometimes, we are walking on the porch of one house but above us is the yard of another house.

Going around the bends in the alleys just wide enough for motorbikes and pedestrians to avoid each other are colorful, vibrant walls with various themes from flowers, trees, birds to images associated with the lives of people in coastal villages...

Each painting has its own color and theme that excites visitors.

Peaceful seascapes with clear blue water stretching to the horizon, small boats anchored at the estuary or boats bobbing far from shore are the most common images in Nhon Ly fishing village. Although fishing, the fishing village does not have the fishy smell of fish and is very clean.

Mothers and wives in Nhon Ly fishing village wait for their husbands and children to return from fishing and tell each other everyday stories.

The restaurants for fishermen are located deep in small alleys and lanes, creating a space that is both strange and familiar!

Familiar because there are many houses built in the traditional architecture of Vietnamese villages from the 70s-80s, with large yards and bougainvillea trellises in front of the house, green windows that both bring a simple beauty and remind people of the old times.

In Nhon Ly fishing village, many houses were built in the 80s with traditional architecture of Vietnamese villages in coastal areas.

Having lived on this land for nearly 70 years, Mr. Thuan said that his house is a small house, located halfway up the slope.

The house was built in 1989, with classical architecture in a coastal village, a three-room house, quite modest in area but enough for the family to live, attached for 3 generations here. From the main door of the house, when opened, there will be a full "view" of the sea.

Many young people enjoy checking in at these ancient houses.

He said that when visiting the fishing village, one must visit the ancient well, which is nearly 200 years old. This used to be the place that provided water for the whole village.

“No matter how dry it is, there is enough water all year round for everyone. However, now that economic conditions are better, people use less water from this well. The well has been restored for tourists to visit, the water is very clear and cool…” - Mr. Thuan excitedly introduced us to more interesting things in the fishing village.

Huong Giang (Hanoi) chose Nhon Ly fishing village as her destination on a trip with friends.

During a trip with friends to Nhon Ly fishing village, Huong Giang (Cau Giay district, Hanoi) shared: “I have been here for a day, choosing Nhon Ly - Quy Nhon as my destination because I want to experience the real life of the fishing village people here. This place is really great”.

Huong Giang likes the mural-painted streets and the small slopes that lead between the three-room houses of the locals and towards the sea. Giang said that she will return soon.

Having been to Nhon Ly 8 years ago, this time returning, Mr. Bui Duc Hop (Ba Dinh, Hanoi) was extremely surprised by the changes in the fishing village. “Many houses have been rebuilt to be more spacious, interspersed with old traditional houses, many restaurants, hotels, eateries, homestays have sprung up, tourism services are better…

The scenery and people are still as peaceful as before. Coming here, I feel like I am “healed” by the beauty of nature, the sea breeze, and the people here” - Mr. Hop shared.

Listening to the feelings of coastal people

Under the fading sunlight as the sunset gradually falls on the sea next to the fishing village, old fisherman Nguyen Minh Tan (64 years old, Ly Luong village, Nhon Ly commune, Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province) tells the story of more than 3 generations of his family living on this land.

He said that no one knows how old Nhon Ly fishing village is. They only know that since the sea was established, this fishing village has grown and flourished. Most of the people here were born in the village and grew up to make a living from the sea.

Boats and sampans anchored at the estuary.

In his memory, the images that have been closely associated with his childhood until now are the generations of people going out to sea one after another: "The rich spend their lives on big ships, while the poor laugh happily on small boats."

Every day, he said goodbye to his father early in the morning and welcomed him at night. Sometimes, his father would be gone for a whole week before returning. However, every time he saw his father, he was filled with joy because of the full catch of shrimp and fish, signaling the family would have plenty of meals for a long time to come.

Mr. Tan confided that now, following in their father's footsteps, his two sons continue the journey of "conquering the ocean".

At the age of 5, he followed his father to sea to help him fish. And so it was passed down from father to son, until he retired from seafaring and handed over the ship to his two sons.

Every day at 5am, his two sons and other local fishermen sail their boats about 2-3 nautical miles from shore to cast their nets, returning to shore at 4pm. After each fishing trip, the fishermen unload their goods at the fishing port for traders to buy. From there, seafood spread throughout urban markets and infiltrated the mainland. Each profitable sea trip brought his family hundreds of millions of dong. Even the worst trip earned him tens of millions of dong.

According to Mr. Tan, every year in the 8th and 9th lunar months, fishermen in Nhon Ly fishing village prepare to repair fishing boats, fishing nets and other fishing tools to prepare for trips during the rough sea season.

In recent years, when tourism began to develop, a part of the village's youth left the sea to switch to service jobs on shore.

Mr. Nguyen Tri - owner of a homestay located right next to the beach said that after 2016, many households in Nhon Ly have switched from fishing to doing tourism business, from investing in passenger canoes, buying electric cars, opening restaurants, eateries, and many discovery tourism companies have sprung up.

The number of tourists coming here is also increasing day by day. Realizing the potential for tourism development in the fishing village, more than 2 years ago he switched to tourism and did not follow his family's fishing career.

From the first steps of self-study and exploration of tourism, he aimed to develop tourism in a sustainable direction based on local cultural foundations, aiming to keep visitors staying, experiencing local culture and life...

Currently, he has a homestay for tourists named after him, combined with developing tours around Binh Dinh such as: Ky Co - Eo Gio, Hon Seo...

Tourists experience fishing at Hon Seo, Nhon Ly commune, Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province.

According to Mr. Tri, at this time, visitors can go fishing, squid fishing at night... Early in the morning, they can go to the fishing port to see people exchanging and trading seafood, then they can buy fresh seafood to process themselves.

Or visit and check in at Ngoc Hoa Pagoda - where there is the tallest two-body Bodhisattva statue in Vietnam today.

Or, stroll around the small alleys, check in with the colorful mural walls, showing the diverse lives of coastal fishermen; listen to the murmuring sound of the waves, immerse yourself in the simple but warm life of the locals and leave behind all the worries of modern life.

“Everything is like a dream, a decade ago no one thought that the poor fishing village of Nhon Ly, with only sun, wind and sand, could “change its skin” like today. Every summer, especially on weekends, tourists from all over the country, especially the Northern provinces and the Central Highlands, come in large numbers, my homestay is always full...” - Mr. Tri shared.

Leaving the fishing village, moving towards the city center, continuing the journey to explore Binh Dinh land, Nhon Ly left me with an indescribable feeling.

The unique features of the marine culture here will become a valuable asset for tourists to explore and experience. One day in the near future, I believe that Nhon Ly fishing village will attract a lot of tourists, contributing to making Binh Dinh one of the marine cultural centers of Central Vietnam.
