Following the visit of General Secretary and President To Lam to Beijing, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development are co-organizing the first Vietnamese Fruit Festival in Beijing, with the cooperation of the Vietnamese Embassy in China, the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association and Chinese partners.

The festival was held on the occasion of the Vietnam-China Intergovernmental Committee meeting held in Beijing on September 29-30. This is the first event, which will serve as a basis for holding the festival more regularly, aiming to systematically connect Vietnamese fruits to the Chinese market.

At a recent meeting between the two ministries on festival preparations, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Truong Thanh Hoai said that the festival is an opportunity to introduce and promote Vietnam's key fruits, seeking opportunities to penetrate deeply into the Beijing market as well as the northern regions of China, which have been left open in the past.

In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, the festival plans to introduce some processed products from fruits and vegetables that have been licensed for import into China.

The festival includes a national pavilion with an area of 200-500m2 at the Xinfadi Agricultural Products Distribution Center, Fengtai District, Beijing. This is not only the largest fruit wholesale market in Beijing but also the leading market in Asia, distributing all kinds of fruits from around the world officially imported into China.

Durian has become a trendy fruit in China in recent years. At supermarkets in Beijing, the price of Thai Monthong durian ranges from 190,000 - 210,000 VND/kg; Vietnam's Ri6 ranges from 150,000 - 160,000 VND/kg. Photo: VCG

This center not only serves the needs of more than 22 million people in the capital of China but also meets the needs of neighboring localities such as Hubei, Tianjin... The center gathers many prestigious and large-consumption fruit distribution enterprises in China, equipped with cold storage infrastructure, modern transportation and preservation equipment for fresh fruits.

The Festival's national pavilion is expected to have 12 islands displaying specialized products of fruits and sweet potatoes that have been officially exported to China and 1 island of general products for Vietnamese businesses to display, introduce and serve visitors to experience the products.

According to the Trade Promotion Agency (Ministry of Industry and Trade), the promotional message for Vietnamese fruits expected to be brought to the capital of a country of over 1.4 billion people this time is expected to be "Vietnamese fruits - Four seasons of deliciousness" (Sino-Vietnamese pronunciation: Vietnam Water Fruit - Four seasons of deliciousness"), with the intention of promoting the class of Vietnamese fruits that are delicious in all four seasons, with a unique taste and flavor compared to fruits that are not grown in the specific climate and soil conditions like in Vietnam.

Within the framework of the Festival, there will be direct trading activities between Vietnamese enterprises and Chinese fruit importers and distributors, product experience programs, seminars on the export potential of Vietnamese fruit...

According to the Trade Promotion Agency, in recent years, China has been Vietnam's largest trading partner. The total two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and China accounts for one-quarter of Vietnam's total import-export turnover with the world. In the opposite direction, Vietnam is one of China's largest trading partners with the world, and is China's largest partner in ASEAN.

Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export value in the first 6 months of 2024 reached 3.33 billion USD, an increase of 24.3% over the same period in 2023. Of which, the export turnover of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables to China reached 2.1 billion USD, accounting for 64% of the total export turnover, with many products and brands having a solid position in China, favored by consumers.

However, in recent times, Vietnamese fruits have mostly been exported through border trade, informal trade and directly to southern Chinese provinces bordering Vietnam, mainly Guangxi and Yunnan.

To develop sustainable exports and gain higher value, penetrate deeper into the Chinese market, Vietnamese fruit exports need to strongly shift to official channels combined with image and brand promotion.

Beijing, as the capital, political, economic and cultural center of the country, is a high-value and high-demand market. Organizing the Fruit Festival in Beijing to promote the brand and image of delicious and nutritious tropical fruits of Vietnam will attract the attention and participation of many Chinese and international businesses.

"This will be a good opportunity for Vietnamese producers and suppliers to introduce and promote their brands and images of typical fruit products, as well as to find customers and increase trade activities. This event will open up the basis and experience in organizing specialized festivals more regularly not only in Beijing but also in the central and northern regions of China to connect and expand the export of Vietnamese fruit to this market" - the Trade Promotion Agency commented.
