Women's military conscription is unprecedented in Brazil, although women have been in the professional military since the 1980s.
Since 1980, Brazilian women have been allowed to join the professional military through exams. |
Starting January 2025, conscription for women will become a reality in Brazil. Interested candidates can choose to join any of the forces, including the Navy, Army or Air Force, and will undergo interviews, medical examinations and physical tests.
That means, Brazil opens its armed forces to anyone who wants to serve the country.
This year, the Brazilian military will recruit 1,465 women to join the military, including 1,010 positions in the Army, 300 in the Air Force and 155 in the Navy. Military service lasts from 12 months and can be extended for up to eight years. The jobs are mainly in the fields of health, education and logistics.
Candidates can apply online or in person, starting from January 1 to June 30.
As of January 15, Brazilian authorities have received more than 18,000 applications for voluntary military service from female citizens of the country.
Since 1980, Brazilian women have been able to join the professional military through exams. There are currently 37,000 women serving in the Brazilian armed forces, accounting for 10% of the military.
Last August, President Lula da Silva signed a law allowing women to join the military, a move that is seen as part of efforts to ensure gender equality, one of the priorities of the current Brazilian government.
Every year, about 1.5 million young men volunteer to join the army when they turn 18, but in reality, less than 10% are recruited. Military service for men began in 1874.
