TPO - Through testing samples of gas burned in wells in Soc Trang, scientists suspect it could be biogas or oil field gas, with potential for exploitation and use as fuel.

On the afternoon of July 15, the Department of Science and Technology of Soc Trang province coordinated with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of the province to organize a workshop on "Gas from domestic water wells and research orientations for exploration and exploitation of shallow gas in Soc Trang".

The phenomenon of gas from a well igniting a fire was discovered in Thuan Hung commune, My Tu district, Soc Trang province in May 2024.

In response to the above incident, the leaders of the People's Committee of Soc Trang province have directed the provincial departments to conduct a direct survey; invite research experts to explain the phenomenon and orient research on exploration and exploitation of shallow gas in Soc Trang province.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Duy - Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Soc Trang province spoke at the workshop.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Duy - Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Soc Trang said that the workshop aimed to accurately assess the current situation of gas from wells, orient research on exploration and exploitation. Along with that, assess the geological structure, groundwater and surface water fluctuations in the coastal area of Vinh Chau town to propose solutions to adapt to climate change.

People came to see the boiling well and lit a fire.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Van Xuan - University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) said that analysis of gas samples from water wells in Thuan Hung commune showed that this gas originated from the decomposition of organic materials; high CH4 content (possibly biogas or gas in oil fields), with potential for exploitation and use as fuel.

In addition, the emitted gas has low CO2 and H2S content, and because it is far from residential areas, it has low impact on residents' lives and the ecological environment.

Associate Professor Xuan suggested that there should be a project to scientifically assess the overall structure, gas distribution, exploitation and application potential. This gas source is likely to bring many economic benefits to the locality.

The leaders of the Department of Science and Technology of Soc Trang province proposed that in the coming time, scientists continue to assess more closely the gas reserves and propose more in-depth research on shallow gas in Soc Trang.

Previously, Tien Phong reported that in Thuan Hung commune, My Tu district (Soc Trang province), many people flocked to a rice field located about 100m from a residential area to see a water hole boiling by itself, and when lit, it immediately caught fire. Mr. Ly Thol, the owner of the field, said that in 2002, his family drilled a well to get water and discovered gas coming up and burning, so the family installed a pipe to use for cooking. In 2006, his family moved house, the well was filled in to make rice fields until now. Recently, someone discovered gas burning in the field, the water was bubbling, so many people using social networks came to film and spread it, attracting many curious people to come and watch.
