The above information was stated by the Ministry of Education and Training in the framework plan for the 2024-2025 school year recently issued. In previous years, the Ministry hardly announced the expected high school graduation exam schedule at the beginning of the school year.
2025 is the first year of the high school graduation exam according to the new program (2018 program). Students must take four subjects. Of which, two are compulsory subjects: Math and Literature. Two optional subjects are from the subjects that students study in high school, including Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Literature, Geography, History, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology and Foreign Languages (English, German, Russian, Japanese, French, Chinese, Korean).
The 2025 high school graduation exam is expected to take place at the end of June.
Previously, the Ministry of Education and Training also planned to shorten the exam time to two days with three sessions, instead of four sessions as before. In which, candidates will take a Literature test in one session, a Math test in one session, and two elective subjects in one session. With 36 combinations of two elective subjects, the Ministry believes this is a big challenge for exam organization.
To arrange optimal exam rooms and limit the need for candidates to move around a lot, the Ministry has set out the principle: "Candidates taking the same combination of two elective subjects will be arranged in the same exam room". Accordingly, localities will survey students' exam subject preferences from December this year to develop plans and test them.
Compared to present, the number of subjects will be reduced by two, the number of exam sessions will be reduced by one. The Literature exam will still be in essay format. The remaining subjects will be in multiple choice format with questions of choosing the correct option, true/false answers and short answers.

Notably, for multiple-choice exams, there will be a maximum of 3 types of multiple-choice test questions used in the exam:
Multiple choice questions (this format has been used for many years in Vietnam). According to the exam format from 2025, Foreign Language subjects will only use this format. The remaining multiple choice subjects will have a part using this format.
Multiple choice questions in True/False format, each question has 4 ideas, candidates must answer True/False for each idea of the question. This format requires candidates to have comprehensive capacity, knowledge and skills to achieve maximum score, limiting the use of "tricks" to choose answers from noisy options like in multiple choice test format. The probability of randomly scoring the maximum score is 1/16, 4 times smaller than the current multiple choice test format.
Short answer multiple choice questions: This format is similar to the essay question format, and is evaluated through the final result that the candidate must fill in on the answer sheet. This format requires candidates to have solid abilities, knowledge and skills, and limits the use of "tricks" to choose answers from confusing options like in multiple choice tests.
"The two new multiple-choice test formats, through practical testing, have been shown to be suitable for designing exams in the direction of assessing capacity, while improving the ability to classify candidates," the Ministry of Education and Training assessed. The exam time for each subject is 120 minutes for Literature; 90 minutes for Math; and 50 minutes for other subjects.
