However, through inspection in the fields, the small leaf rollers appear to bloom at very high density, on average from 200 - 300 individuals/ m2 , in some places 500 - 700 individuals/ m2 , in some cases thousands of individuals/ m2 . Implementing the provincial directives on focusing on leadership and direction of preventing and controlling small leaf rollers and other pests and diseases, protecting the spring rice crop in 2024, Kien Xuong and Tien Hai districts have issued documents, organized implementation, and launched a campaign to prevent and control small leaf rollers combined with spraying to prevent rice blast, two-spotted stem borers and various types of planthoppers. The time for spraying to prevent and control pests and diseases is from April 29 to May 3, 2024.
After 2 days (April 29-30), Kien Xuong district has sprayed 7,500 hectares of spring rice out of a total of over 11,000 hectares, Tien Hai district has sprayed 5,700 hectares out of a total of over 9,700 hectares; localities are determined to complete the spraying as planned.

Inspecting the fields of Minh Tan (Kien Xuong) and Nam Ha (Tien Hai) communes, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee highly appreciated the initiative of the two districts in directing localities to focus on pest control to protect spring rice. Although it was a holiday, the commune members still stayed in the fields, focusing on spraying pesticides to prevent pests according to the direction of the province and district.
He emphasized: Currently, the leaf roller is in its peak bloom period, if not sprayed in time, it will affect productivity and quality. He suggested that localities step up propaganda work, take advantage of favorable weather to guide members to simultaneously spray leaf roller insecticide on 100% of spring rice areas in combination with preventing planthoppers and other pests. In case of unfavorable weather, direct additional spraying to ensure that all rice areas are sprayed. He requested the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to closely monitor the weather and pests and diseases in the fields; send technical staff to strengthen localities to inspect and guide measures to prevent and control leaf roller pests; promptly supplement measures to care for and prevent pests and diseases in accordance with weather developments and the situation of pests and diseases.

According to the report of the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, by April 30, along with Kien Xuong and Tien Hai districts, the rate of spraying to prevent and control small leaf rollers in the districts of Quynh Phu, Vu Thu, Hung Ha, Dong Hung reached 85%, and Thai Thuy reached 80%.
