In July, Germany, France and Spain will send warships to Japan for joint naval exercises. In August, Italy will send the aircraft carrier Cavour to dock in Japan. To avoid angering China, the aircraft carrier Cavour will not enter the Taiwan Strait, but will pass through the South China Sea. Not long ago, Italy agreed with Japan and the UK to cooperate in researching and manufacturing a new generation of fighter aircraft.
The overlapping interests of the parties promote this cooperation and ensure that it becomes increasingly stronger. Tokyo increasingly attaches importance to building and strengthening political relations, military, defense and security cooperation, not only economic and trade relations, with EU and NATO members in Europe to expand its political and security role in the world. These moves by Japan are aimed at countering Russia, China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
Since Giorgia Meloni became Prime Minister of Italy, the country has adjusted its policy towards China and stopped participating in Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative.
Rome intends to create an “Italian-Japanese Axis” to enhance Italy’s role in Europe, the EU and NATO, to counter Russia and China, and to reach out to the Indo-Pacific region. For Ms. Meloni, Tokyo is the ideal partner in the Indo-Pacific for Rome to achieve these interests and goals. Dual interests bring distant partners closer together.
