Identifying economic development and increasing people's income as one of the important goals of the new rural construction program, in recent times, Khanh Hong commune (Yen Khanh district) has focused on directing and implementing many solutions to promote production and improve the material and spiritual life of the people.

As a purely agricultural commune of Yen Khanh district, over the years, Khanh Hong commune has always identified agricultural production as one of its strengths and focused on leading development towards commodity production and value enhancement.

In rice production, the commune has effectively applied scientific and technical advances to production, transformed the rice variety structure towards increasing the area of high-quality rice, organic rice and converting from direct sowing to transplanting to limit weedy rice and limit the use of pesticides, contributing to environmental protection.

In particular, with the tradition of vegetable production on fertile land and colored rice land, the commune has encouraged people to focus on expanding high-value commercial crops. With the motto "each season, each food", farmers in the commune have implemented measures of crop rotation, intercropping, intercropping or off-season planting of vegetables. Currently, the area of colored land and some areas of colored rice land have been rotated to increase crops 4-5 times/year with the main crops being melons, vegetables, tomatoes, squash, etc. Thanks to that, the efficiency per unit of cultivated area has increased, many households have an income of hundreds of millions of VND each year from effectively rotating commercial crops.

Ms. Le Thi Luyen, hamlet 5, Khanh Hong commune said: For more than ten years, my family has converted the area of fertile land and part of the two-rice land to grow commercial crops. The number of land rotations is from 4-5 crops/year. Currently, my family has 2 sao of tomatoes, 3 sao of cucumbers, 5 sao of eggplant, 2 sao of bitter melon. All crops are being harvested with relatively high yields. These are crops with stable consumption markets, with economic value many times higher than rice cultivation or traditional crops such as corn, peanuts, beans.

According to Ms. Luyen's calculations, one sao of rotating commercial crops brings in an income of nearly 5 million VND/crop (ie 20 million VND/year). Thus, with the current area of commercial crops, her family earns a profit of nearly 200 million VND/year. However, according to Ms. Luyen, to have that source of income depends on many factors, first of all, favorable weather, actively applying scientific and technological advances in production and being sensitive to market needs to choose suitable crops, avoiding widespread production.

In addition to producing commercial crops on fertile land and fertile rice land, Khanh Hong commune encourages people to expand and develop many economic models of farms, family farms, and new economic models with high efficiency. In Khanh Hong commune, there are more and more effective economic development models such as: raising pigs and cows; raising aquatic products; growing sweet potatoes for shoots...

Along with that, Khanh Hong commune encourages people to promote the development of small-scale industries, occupations and services. Currently, traditional craft villages are all effective; many other occupations are still maintained such as food processing, agricultural products, mechanics, civil wood processing... Enterprises and households continue to maintain the production scale, creating jobs for workers with stable incomes of 5-8 million VND/person/month.

Thanks to the synchronous implementation of many solutions for comprehensive development of production sectors, the economy of Khanh Hong commune has seen many improvements. In 2022, the commune's agricultural production value reached 155 million VND/ha/year. Estimated revenue from agricultural production, small-scale industry, trades and services reached nearly 600 billion VND. Average income per capita reached 60 million VND/person/year. In 2023, the locality strives for the commune's average income per capita to reach 68 million VND/person/year. Promoting economic development has significantly contributed to the completion of sustainable NTM criteria and towards being recognized as an advanced NTM commune.

Mr. Pham Quoc Hoan, Chairman of Khanh Hong Commune People's Committee, said: Increasing people's income is always the top priority, related to many other factors in the process of building a new rural area. Therefore, in the coming time, Khanh Hong commune will continue to synchronously deploy economic development solutions to exploit land potential more effectively through investing in building advanced and modern agricultural production models, linking production with processing and product consumption. At the same time, promote the development of small-scale industry and services, create jobs and increase income for local people.
