Ho Chi Minh City: An 18-year-old male patient, 11 days after eye surgery to correct myopia at Saigon Eye Hospital II, had his right eye's vision reduced from 9/10 to 2/10.
In a petition sent to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, the patient’s mother, who lives in Gia Lai, said that when she was admitted to the hospital, her son’s vision without glasses was 6/10, and he had surgery for myopia on April 10. The next day, a follow-up examination showed that both eyes had recovered well, and he was discharged. A week later, the patient went for a medical examination to apply to a military university, and discovered that his vision in his right eye had decreased from 6/10 to 4/10.
After returning to the hospital for a check-up, the doctor noted that the vision in the right eye was 2/10, and the cause of the vision loss could not be determined. The family took the child to Singapore for examination, and the doctor concluded that there was no treatment for the eye.
On November 11, a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that the Department Inspectorate had come to the hospital to work on issues related to the patient's treatment process.
According to a report from Saigon Eye Hospital II, the patient was admitted with a diagnosis of myopia and astigmatism in both eyes, and was scheduled for Femto-Lasik surgery for both eyes. He was discharged one day after surgery with visual acuity in both eyes reaching 9/10. However, 10 days later, the patient returned for a check-up and was diagnosed with vision in the right eye decreasing to 2/10.
Saigon Eye Hospital II coordinated with the patient to visit other medical facilities to determine the cause. The examination results at Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital and Singapore National Ophthalmology Center both showed that the right eye's vision ranged from 2/10 to 4/10, the left eye was 10/10.
The hospital said it had established a professional council to evaluate the treatment and concluded that the steps of examination and patient preparation before and during surgery were in accordance with procedures.
The Department of Health continues to consider and resolve the patient's family's application according to regulations.
Femto-Lasik is one of the three most popular refractive error treatment methods today, along with Lasik and Relex Smile surgery. This method is quite safe, minimizing the risk of complications during surgery.
