Israel meets to discuss hostage deal with Hamas

Officials from Qatar have acted as intermediaries in negotiations with the US and Israel.

and Hamas have said in recent days that a deal is near.

Before gathering the entire government for a vote, Mr Netanyahu met with Israel's wartime cabinet and security cabinet about the deal.

Hamas is reportedly holding more than 200 hostages, after the group attacked Israel on October 7.

The Israeli prime minister said US President Joe Biden's intervention helped improve the deal, freeing more hostages in exchange for fewer concessions.

However, Mr. Netanyahu still affirmed that Israel's overall goal remains unchanged.

In a recording at the beginning of the most recent government meeting, he said: "We are at war and we will continue to be at war until we achieve all our objectives: destroying Hamas, bringing back all the hostages and ensuring that no one in Gaza can threaten Israel."

If approved, the deal would bring the first truce in a war that has seen Israeli bombings flatten large swaths of Gaza, killing 13,300 civilians and leaving two-thirds of the 2.3 million population homeless, according to Gaza authorities.

A US official with knowledge of the deal said it would require Hamas to release 50 hostages held in Israel, mostly women and children, in exchange for 150 Palestinian prisoners and a four- or five-day pause in fighting.

The ceasefire will help bring humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari said proposals for a deal to free the hostages were presented to Israel early Tuesday.

“The State of Qatar is awaiting the results of the vote on this proposal by the Israeli government.”

So far, Hamas has only released four hostages: 59-year-old American Judith Raanan and her 17-year-old daughter Natalie Raanan on October 20, on “humanitarian grounds,” along with 79-year-old Israeli woman Nurit Cooper and 85-year-old Yocheved Lifshitz on October 23.

The armed wing of Islamic Jihad, which took part in the October 7 attack alongside Hamas, late Tuesday announced the death of an Israeli hostage.

“We expressed our willingness to release this hostage for humanitarian reasons, but the enemy delayed too long and that led to her death,” the Al Quds Brigade wrote on its Telegram channel.

The Israeli government said its forces had surrounded the Jabalya refugee camp, a flashpoint in the Hamas stronghold.

Palestinian media agency WAFA said 33 people were killed and dozens wounded in an Israeli air strike in Jabalya, a densely populated area outside Gaza City where Hamas has been fighting Israeli armor.

In southern Gaza, media reports said 10 people were killed and 22 wounded in an Israeli airstrike on an apartment in the city of Khan Younis.
