Posting on social network X, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Oren Marmorstein said: "Repeatedly, HRW's words regarding Israel's actions in Gaza are completely untrue and far from reality...
Contrary to the claims in the HRW report, Israel’s efforts are aimed at destroying Hamas’ terrorist capabilities, not at the Gazan people.” Mr. Marmorstein also accused Hamas of “using civilians as human shields and embedding terrorist infrastructure in residential areas.”
HRW recently released a 172-page report claiming that there is evidence that Israel is committing war crimes, based on interviews with displaced people, satellite imagery, and publicly available information up to August 2024.
Israel's Channel 12 news channel reported on the same day that the country's Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to re-evaluate the tenure of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, citing Mr. Ben-Gvir's apparent interference in police matters.
Channel 12 published a copy of a letter sent by Attorney General Baharav-Miara to Prime Minister Netanyahu, in which she described cases of Mr. Ben-Gvir “illegally interfering” in the professional activities of the police, although the Minister of National Security is only responsible for general policy. According to Ms. Baharav-Miara, the Israeli government’s lack of response is a show of support for Mr. Ben-Gvir.
Responding to the incident, Mr. Ben-Gvir, head of a small extremist party in Netanyahu's ruling coalition, said the person who needed to be fired immediately was the Attorney General.
Earlier, Prime Minister Netanyahu fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant due to internal disagreements.
