Medical news on July 24: Responding to World Breastfeeding Week 2024

The Hanoi Department of Health has just issued Official Dispatch No. 3269/SYT-NVY to affiliated public and private health units regarding the implementation of World Breastfeeding Week in 2024.

Responding to World Breastfeeding Week 2024

World Breastfeeding Week takes place from August 1 to August 7 every year to encourage and promote breastfeeding. The theme of this year's Week is: "Narrowing the gap - Supporting Breastfeeding for all mothers - Connecting arms of love".

The City Center for Disease Control coordinates with relevant units to guide industrial parks and enterprises with more than 1,000 female workers in the area to deploy breast milk collection and storage rooms at the workplace in accordance with the provisions of Decree No. 145/2020/ND-CP dated December 14, 2020 of the Government, Decision No. 5175/QD-BYT dated November 9, 2021 of the Ministry of Health approving the document "Guidelines for deploying breast milk collection and storage rooms at the workplace".

Disseminate information to all levels, sectors and people about the importance of early breastfeeding within the first hour after birth, exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months and continued breastfeeding until 24 months of age. Communicate about the benefits of breastfeeding for children.

General hospitals with obstetrics and pediatrics departments, specialized obstetrics and pediatrics hospitals, both public and private, must comply with Decree 100/2014/ND-CP dated November 6, 2014 of the Government on trading and using nutritional products for infants, feeding bottles, and artificial nipples.

Implement Circular No. 38/2016/TT-BYT dated October 31, 2016 of the Ministry of Health stipulating a number of measures to promote breastfeeding at medical examination and treatment facilities.

Maintain counseling activities for pregnant women and postpartum mothers on the benefits of breastfeeding; guide breastfeeding mothers on proper breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, continued breastfeeding up to 24 months and how to maintain breast milk supply.

In particular, providing essential care for mothers and newborns during and immediately after birth helps increase the rate of babies being breastfed within the first hour after birth.

Successful treatment for children with rare Kawasaki disease

According to information from Cho Ray Hospital, for the first time in the South, doctors have successfully operated and treated a 6-year-old patient with the rare Kawasaki disease.

The patient is NNM D, born in 2018, in Khanh Hoa. The patient was admitted to Cho Ray Hospital in a state of occasional chest pain during exertion, with bruises due to blood clotting disorder due to previous treatment with anticoagulants.

The Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit conducted active diagnoses such as echocardiography, CT-scan and coronary angiography. The results revealed that the patient had multiple aneurysms, 2 very large aneurysms in the right coronary artery, with blood clots inside and a very high risk of rupture.

If not treated promptly, there are two risks that can cause the patient to die, including: First, if the coronary artery is acutely blocked, the child will have complete ischemia of the right heart, leading to myocardial infarction and sudden death. Second, an aneurysm that is too large (almost 10 times the size of a normal coronary artery) will cause the risk of rupture of the right coronary artery, leading to death.

The Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit coordinated with other specialists to consult and perform surgery on the child.

The surgery was completed after 8 hours. The team completely removed the thrombus in the coronary aneurysm in both places of the right coronary artery. The first aneurysm was about 3cm in size and the second aneurysm was about 2cm.

The team then used a 5mm pericardial guidewire to connect the origin of the right coronary artery to the distal end of the remaining coronary artery, cut off the aneurysm sac, and reconstructed it.

24 hours after surgery, the patient was extubated. The electrocardiogram results showed that the patient was stable, the ultrasound showed a heartbeat with good recovery of heart function. The postoperative progress was favorable, no pericardial effusion was detected, no myocardial infarction, and vital signs were stable. One week after surgery, the child was able to sit and walk on his own, so he was discharged from the hospital.

According to doctors at Cho Ray Hospital, Kawasaki is a very rare disease. In Vietnam, the incidence rate is 50-100 children/100,000 children. If this disease is not detected and treated promptly, it can damage all medium and small arteries, damaging the endothelium.

To avoid late detection and treatment of this dangerous disease, Cho Ray Hospital doctors recommend: When detecting a child with cardiovascular disease, it is necessary to take the child to hospitals with specialized cardiovascular departments, for timely examination and treatment, with the right expertise, at the right time for surgical intervention, to avoid unfortunate consequences later...
