On December 30, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Dr. Nguyen Duy Long - director of the 115 Emergency Center - said that the 115 call center coordinator had just received, coordinated and promptly guided the successful rescue of a child in cardiac arrest.
Specifically, on the morning of December 29, hotline 115 received a case of an 11-month-old girl who was unconscious and cyanotic in Thu Duc City.
When first receiving the call, the child's relatives lost their composure and panicked because the child suddenly coughed, choked, turned purple and fainted after eating fish porridge.
After calming down, the 115 coordinator exploited the information and, using his expertise, discovered that the baby had signs of cardiac arrest.
Immediately, the coordinator instructed chest compressions over the phone and quickly coordinated the emergency team from the satellite station of Thu Duc City Hospital to approach the scene.
While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, the family was still instructed by the coordinator to perform continuous chest compressions via video call.
Thanks to timely first aid, when the emergency team arrived, the child had a pulse and blood pressure and was quickly transferred to the hospital. At the hospital, the child was diagnosed with choking on a foreign object.
MSc. Nguyen Trong Hien - Head of Operations, 115 Emergency Center - said that on average each month the unit receives about 70 cases of cardiac arrest at the scene.
In such a critical situation, the victim will receive immediate effective chest compressions to maintain circulation, performed by the first witness before the professional emergency team arrives to continue treatment.
According to the American Heart Association, chest compressions performed before emergency personnel arrive increase a cardiac arrest patient's chances of survival by two to three times.
Therefore, T-CPR (Telecommunicator cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is an important intervention, closely related to the survival of patients with cardiac arrest at the scene.
From the need to respond more quickly and effectively to emergency care outside of hospitals, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has issued a Project to develop a professional emergency care system outside of hospitals by 2030.
Among the many contents of the project is the investment in upgrading the emergency reception and coordination system, which includes the implementation of video calls and T-CPR.
Currently, the project has been planned and implemented by the city's health sector, the 115 Emergency Center and related units, step by step professionally, to more effectively respond to emergency care for the people.
