This was affirmed by the Vietnamese Ambassador to ASEAN, Ton Thi Ngoc Huong, in an interview with a VOV reporter on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of Vietnam's accession to ASEAN (July 28, 1995 - July 28, 2024).

On July 28, 1995, Vietnam officially became a member of ASEAN, and throughout its nearly 30 years of partnership with ASEAN, Vietnam has always been committed to participating in and contributing to ASEAN in a proactive, positive, and responsible manner.
Ambassador Ton Thi Ngoc Huong emphasized three important milestones in Vietnam's accession to ASEAN: chairing the ASEAN Standing Committee for the 2000-2001 term, assuming the ASEAN chairmanship in 2010 and 2020 after the adoption of the ASEAN Charter. Each of Vietnam's ASEAN chairmanship terms has left a significant and impactful mark, especially in 2020, when Vietnam, along with ASEAN, faced an unprecedented challenge: the Covid-19 pandemic, which left profound and serious consequences for the region and the world .
In addition, Vietnam has also contributed to shaping important future development directions of ASEAN, such as building and adopting the Hanoi Action Programme in 1998 to respond to the 1997-1998 economic and financial crisis, contributing to the development and implementation of the ASEAN Vision 2020, the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, the ASEAN Charter, and successfully coordinating relations between ASEAN and important partners such as China, Japan, South Korea, the United States, and Russia.
Vietnam's contributions have been recognized by ASEAN countries and partners, playing a very important role in strengthening solidarity, unifying ASEAN's central role, and enhancing its resilience in the face of a rapidly changing and complex regional and international environment.
Ambassador Ton Thi Ngoc Huong stated that Vietnam's commitment to ASEAN is consistent and unwavering. Vietnam consistently ranks among the top countries in terms of fulfilling commitments on ASEAN regional economic integration, and was a pioneer in initiating the idea of forming the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community, paying close attention to building a harmonious, cohesive, and people-centered ASEAN Community.
At the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting held from July 21-27 in Laos, Vietnam officially handed over its role as coordinator of ASEAN-Korea relations and assumed the role of coordinating relations between ASEAN and its two new partners, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
According to Ambassador Ton Thi Ngoc Huong, this is also a new practice in ASEAN, because for the first time, Vietnam will be coordinating with two partners simultaneously for a period. Currently, Vietnam is working closely with its partners as well as the current coordinating country, Brunei, to ensure a smooth and effective handover of the coordinating role, as well as developing a plan to promote relations between ASEAN and its two partners, New Zealand and the UK, for the period from 2024 to 2027.
