Workshop "Policies and resources for building and developing Hoi An"

On June 14, the People's Committee of Hoi An City (Quang Nam Province) organized a scientific workshop with the theme "Policies and resources for building and developing Hoi An - a global creative city".

Attending the workshop were representatives of the UNESCO Office in Vietnam; the National Institute of Culture and Arts, the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) and a number of experts and architects who have been associated with Hoi An for many years.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee, said that the workshop is of great importance in setting out directions and solutions for Hoi An City in the first stage of effectively participating in UNESCO's global network of creative cities.

The workshop aims to collect and absorb the opinions and profound suggestions of experts and scientists who are knowledgeable in various fields, especially in the field of handicrafts and folk arts; to exchange, discuss and comprehensively evaluate the role, resources and policies that the city can mobilize to implement its commitments in the process of joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

In particular, finding solutions to attract the participation of young people, creating forums, trends, nurturing and developing talents in the fields of creative culture, organizing events, applying digital technology in promoting and introducing folk art and handicraft products to increase value and position in the contemporary context.

"At the same time, there are mechanisms and policies to encourage people and the business community to continue to pioneer in producing green, sustainable, and quality products, aiming to protect nature, based on the preservation and promotion of indigenous cultural values. Strengthening policies, promoting teaching and supporting artisans, creating a creative environment for artisans and creative artists... Hoi An city leaders always appreciate and will fully absorb and mobilize the proposed contents, solutions to build and develop in all fields so that creative culture can develop in both quality and quantity, contributing more positively to the city's economic growth," said Mr. Son.

The Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee also shared that the workshop also received many presentations from experts, scientists, researchers, leaders of specialized agencies of the province and city on solutions to preserve and develop culture as well as promote the development of handicrafts and folk arts. Hoi An City would like to acknowledge and accept the contributions from experts and scholars in various fields, thereby continuing to build and perfect projects, programs, tasks, and key solutions in realizing the viewpoints and commitments of the Global Creative Cities Network in the coming time.

According to MSc. Tran Hai Van, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), with the characteristics of an ancient urban complex possessing outstanding strengths in natural conditions, cultural heritage, tourism attractiveness, dynamic and creative people, etc., Hoi An has become a bright spot attracting the attention of domestic and international tourists and friends. Hoi An's recognition as a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of handicrafts and folk arts continues to create certain advantages and opportunities for Hoi An in the process of international integration.

Joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of crafts and folk arts is a very proactive and wise step of the government and people of Quang Nam province and Hoi An city because the city is aware of the outstanding strengths of its locality in this field.

"In the context that Vietnam has set specific goals for developing a network of creative cities in Vietnam to join the UNESCO network of creative cities as well as the goals for developing cultural industries contributing 7% of GDP as set out in the Cultural Development Strategy to 2030, as one of the cities in Vietnam that joined the UCCN early, Hoi An needs to include in the city's development policy comprehensive and timely solutions and actions to develop cultural exchange and international cooperation from policy, people to infrastructure, contributing to achieving common goals of international integration and sustainable development", shared MSc. Tran Hai Van.

Mr. Tong Quoc Hung, Head of Hoi An Department of Culture and Information, shared that joining the Creative Cities Network brings great opportunities to Hoi An. Besides, it also requires the City government and people to fulfill their committed tasks.

"Hoi An needs to continue to make efforts to promote handicraft and folk art resources to become a strategic action framework to help the city achieve sustainable socio-economic development goals, highlighting the brand and reputation of this heritage," said Mr. Hung, adding that to fulfill its commitment to the network, in the coming time, Hoi An city will concretize the action plan to implement the initiative, and at the same time connect with members of the network to build and develop together in the fields of creative culture.

Hoi An has become a bright spot attracting the attention of domestic and international tourists and friends.

At the workshop, delegates also shared many presentations on solutions to preserve and develop culture as well as promote the development of handicrafts and folk arts to contribute ideas to continue building and perfecting projects, programs, tasks, and key solutions in realizing the views and commitments of the global creative cities network in the coming time.
