Le Minh Bao, one of 5 students in the world to surpass 50,000 applications to receive a scholarship from UConn (USA) this year
In addition, Le Minh Bao was also admitted to 10 other top engineering universities such as: University of Illinois, Urbana; University of Maryland, University of Wisconsin, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Massachusetts... Of which, 4 schools offered scholarships with a total value of 266,800 USD (equivalent to 6.6 billion VND).
In a congratulatory letter from UConn, Mr. Vern Granger, the school's Director of Admissions, wrote: "This year's scholarship application process was extremely competitive with more than 50,000 students applying." After two rounds of interviews, Minh Bao excelled over 50,000 candidates and became one of five students selected by the school to receive a scholarship worldwide.
As an honor student, Bao also received another award worth $12,000 that can be used in a variety of ways to enhance his educational experience during his studies.
Sharing the secret to hunting for scholarships and being admitted to top universities in the US, Bao said that during the one and a half year process of preparing for studying abroad, a seemingly basic but most important task was to learn about yourself and your passion for the profession.

According to Bao, the first thing is to learn about yourself and your passion for the profession. This is the most important thing to prepare for the "personal statement" essay. Through this essay, universities can see the personality, goals and maturity of the candidates. Bao said that he chose the topic "Describe a topic, idea or concept that you find so interesting that it makes you lose track of time" and wrote an essay about his curiosity about the industry he is passionate about: Robotics Engineering", Bao said.
After determining your passion for a career, you need to have criteria for choosing a school. For Bao, the number one criterion is the practical experience opportunities that the university can provide. Bao prioritizes high-ranking schools because they often have many research achievements and a strong student community in the major he chooses. In addition, top schools also have connections between labs and many companies come to recruit interns.
Along with the process of self-discovery, ensuring academic results at school is also very important because a good transcript will impress universities when they consider your academic aspects. During the past 2 years of study, I was very lucky to receive a lot of support from Vietnamese teachers and teachers of the AS and A Level programs. In addition to the results shown on the transcript, the IELTS certificate and SAT test also contributed significantly to the competition. After about 2 years of IELTS and SAT preparation, I achieved the desired results, IELTS 7.5 and SAT 1.510.
The third factor that is equally important is participating in extracurricular activities. According to Bao, in addition to helping you develop and express your passion, this is also a basis for universities to see whether the candidate really matches the personal essay or not? Bao has built a rich profile with specialized extracurricular activities, social activities that can help develop leadership skills, communication and meaningful volunteer projects.
Among them, the activities that Bao is most proud of and loves are: Personal project "Assembling a 3-degree-of-freedom robotic arm" with the help of students and professors from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education; founding the running group "The Unstoppable Feet"; a day trip to support disadvantaged children at Phuoc Vinh B Primary School (Tay Ninh), An Hao C Primary School (An Giang) with the student council of VAS Hoang Van Thu. "These trips have helped me develop a lot in terms of teamwork spirit and confidence, helping me to love, sympathize and share with the children here," Bao shared.
