On the afternoon of October 18, the Ministry of Education and Training announced sample questions for 17 subjects for the 2025 high school graduation exam. Of these, the two compulsory subjects, Math and Literature, received much attention from students and teachers.

On social networking forums, students said that the sample questions were both strange and difficult. Teachers also had their opinions about this set of questions.

Math questions make it difficult for candidates

Commenting on the 2025 high school graduation math sample exam, Mr. Tran The Phong (math teacher in Quang Ninh) said that to get a high score, candidates will have to work quite hard.

The test consists of 34 questions instead of 50 multiple-choice questions like last year. Of these, 12 are multiple-choice questions, at the recognition and comprehension levels. The proposed test consists of 4 true-false questions, arranged from recognition to application. The last 6 questions are short-answer multiple-choice questions, all at the application level.

Compared to previous years, the difficulty of the test is relatively high, covering a lot of knowledge from the 10th, 11th and 12th grade programs. However, the knowledge is mainly in grade 12, while the 10th and 11th grade parts are only at a basic level.

According to Mr. Phong, the difference of this year's exam is that there are no questions containing parameters, no composite functions, and there is an additional statistical section. This makes it easier for candidates to handle the types of questions. However, a new point that is also a challenge for students is the question section that requires short answers.

"Candidates cannot choose answers based on luck. For this type of question, candidates need to have a firm grasp of knowledge and know how to apply it intelligently to be able to score points," said Mr. Phong.

In addition, there are some questions on the exam that will be difficult for candidates. According to Mr. Phong, these will be the questions that help classify students.

In addition, according to Mr. Phong's statistics, the exam has quite a lot of application questions, accounting for about 30% of the total number of questions. These are the questions that decide whether the candidate is in the top scorers or just taking the exam with the goal of getting enough points to graduate from high school.

With this sample test, Mr. Phong predicts that the average score that candidates can easily achieve is 5-6 points. At a higher level, around 7-8 points, candidates not only need to have a solid grasp of knowledge but also need to be able to reason and apply many skills to solve the test. For candidates aiming for 9-10 points, this test will be a big challenge.

Literature topics are differentiated.

Mr. Phan The Hoai (Literature teacher in Ho Chi Minh City) shared: "The story of students complaining about difficult questions and praising easy questions is an eternal story that happens almost every year. Especially since 2025 is the first year of taking the exam under the new program, candidates are more worried."

According to Mr. Hoai, the newly announced Literature and Illustration exam has many advantages. In terms of form, the content of the exam is contained on one page, similar to the exam from 2024 and earlier.

In terms of content, the Reading Comprehension section still tests students' reading comprehension knowledge according to genre characteristics. In which, questions 1 and 2 are only at the recognition level, questions 3, 4, and 5 gradually increase to understanding and application. The scoring structure of this section is 4 points, which is very reasonable.

However, achieving a high score is not simple. Candidates need to be able to decode the poem and present the content fully to be able to achieve full marks. As for average students, Mr. Hoai said that they can still achieve 2-3 points out of 4 points.

The writing section, a 2-point literary argument, integrates reading comprehension materials to help students do the test according to their thinking. However, Mr. Hoai commented that understanding the lyrical characters in poetry is relatively difficult for students. The test taker can only write about 50% of the requirements. This Literature test clearly differentiates students according to their abilities.

"Social argumentation is suitable for most students because they have learned and practiced a lot in lower grades. The concern is whether students in remote areas are interested in artificial intelligence or not," said Mr. Hoai.

2025 is the first year that students will take the graduation exam under the new general education program. Candidates will only take 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects (Literature, Mathematics) and 2 elective subjects (among the remaining subjects studied in grade 12 including: Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology).

The Literature subject will still be tested in essay format with a time limit of 120 minutes. The test consists of 2 parts: Reading Comprehension (4 points) and Writing (6 points). The remaining subjects will be tested in multiple choice format, in which the Math test will take 90 minutes, the remaining subjects will take 50 minutes.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, the sample exam ensures compliance with the regulations on the structure and format of the high school graduation exam from 2025 announced by the Ministry, while closely following the 2018 general education program and mainly grade 12.

Compared to previous years, this year's sample exam was announced nearly 5 months earlier, thereby helping schools, teachers and students to be proactive in the process of teaching, learning and reviewing to prepare for the exam.

The 2025 high school graduation exam is scheduled to take place on June 26 and 27.
