Nguyen Nhu Huyen, 20 years old, conquered the admission board and won the Lion Heart Scholarship at BUV in 2022 with her story of overcoming adversity, despite her limited English.

Nguyen Nhu Huyen is currently a second-year student majoring in Marketing Management at British University Vietnam (BUV). In 2022, the young man from Bac Ninh province excelled in becoming the Lion Heart Scholarship Champion, thanks to his determination with the view that "this is the only chance to change your life and you must do it at all costs".

Since childhood, Huyen did not know who his biological parents were, however, he was considered as his own child by his adoptive parents and was taken good care of. The incident happened to the young boy when he was in 7th grade, his adoptive father passed away. "The passing of his father and family problems caused my adoptive mother to collapse. One day while wandering on the street, I suddenly had the thought of dropping out of school," Nhu Huyen recalled.

Thanks to the encouragement of her homeroom teacher, and fear of making her mother sad, Huyen, who was on the verge of dropping out of school, continued to try to gradually regain her spirits and go to school regularly again. "Thinking back now, I don't understand why I wanted to quit so much," Huyen said.

The dream of becoming the BUV Scholarship Champion came to Huyen in 12th grade, when a benefactor asked: "If you continue to study at university, how will you manage your finances?" This time, Huyen no longer wanted to drop out of school but was determined to find an opportunity to pursue his education. For the young boy from Bac Ninh, BUV and the Lion Heart Scholarship were opportunities for him to change himself, change his circumstances and change his own future.

Huyen put all her effort into preparing her application. Knowing that her biggest weakness was English, Huyen was determined to conquer the selection board with a special "strategy", which was simplicity but sincerity and determination.

Huyen shared that many people mistakenly think that a successful essay needs to talk about big issues, show determination to change the world, or use flowery language. However, through the journey of self-transformation that she chose to tell in her essay - from a shy, lonely and timid boy who did not dare to speak up, to a young person who dared to lead, confidently speak up and connect diverse perspectives, she wanted to prove that sometimes, personal, moving stories will be the most touching touchpoints of a deep emotional connection.

"The most important thing you have to show the admissions board is your mark: Who am I?", Huyen emphasized. As a result, the young man successfully convinced the admissions board with the answer "A brave young man who did not lose faith in himself because of adversity, a man who grew up with the love of people who were not his blood relatives and longed to give back love to life".

The young man from Bac Ninh also used English - a language that is not his strong point in the important interview round - to prove his determination and successfully convinced the Interview Council to become the Scholarship Champion.

After becoming the Lion Heart Scholarship Champion, Huyen had the opportunity to access many internship opportunities to apply her knowledge of Marketing, while promoting her inherent creativity.

Huyen also actively participates in volunteer activities to care for, talk to and guide orphans, using her own story to inspire and give them hope - just like the way her predecessors gave her courage.

Sharing about his dream after graduating, Huyen said: "I want to open a travel company to contribute to spreading the beauty of Vietnamese landscapes and people to the world, and also to satisfy my passion for traveling." While working as a support member at the school's International Office (IO), such as volunteering for the recent Summer Trip, Huyen had the opportunity to chat with friends from diverse cultures, from Asia to Europe, America... That was both a way for him to improve his foreign language skills and a motivation to continue his dream of contributing to the community.
