Passengers rescued from trapped cable car
CNN reported on July 8 that dozens of people were trapped for 10 hours on one of the world's highest cable cars in Ecuador due to an electrical problem before being rescued.
Government officials in the South American country said firefighters were alerted at around 4 p.m. on July 6 (local time) about a technical problem affecting the Quito cable car, with at least 70 people trapped.
"In total, authorities rescued 27 people who were hanging from cable cars when the service was not operating and 47 people who were left behind due to lack of transportation on the mountain top," according to a statement from the Ecuadorian government.
There were 27 people trapped on the cable cars.
Tourists were stranded for nearly 10 hours as the system was paralyzed by an electrical failure. Of the 27 people trapped on the cable cars, 17 were brought down by rescuers, while the remaining 10 were able to get off after the system was restarted.
Images from the Quito city government’s Twitter account showed several people being rescued from the cable cars. Others, including children, were wrapped in emergency blankets after the cable cars arrived at the station.

Quito Mayor Pabel Munoz said those rescued showed no signs of hypothermia or injury. He ordered the cable car to be temporarily shut down pending an investigation.
The rescued people were taken to safety and their health conditions were assessed, according to city authorities.
The Quito Cable Car, also known as Teleferiqo, is 3,100-3,947 m above sea level and is one of the highest cable cars in South America. The cable car takes passengers over 2,500 m, with a ride time of about 18 minutes, giving them views of the city of Quito and the surrounding mountains.
