Kien Giang From a newborn lacking breast milk and requiring special care, the 10-month-old chimpanzee (named May) has become a symbol of survival, considered the "hot kid" of Vinpearl Safari.
May is the first chimpanzee born at Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc on May 18, 2023. She is the first child of a chimpanzee father named Jerry, who "naturalized" on Ngoc Island from South Africa, and a chimpanzee mother named Baby from Taiping Zoo in Malaysia. In the early days of May's birth, Baby's mother was always attached to her like a shadow, breastfeeding her, catching lice, and playing together.

However, being a first-time mother, Baby did not have enough milk, so she did not know how to take care of and handle the situation. On the 11th day, May was starved by her mother for 13 hours, causing her health to weaken and her body temperature to drop to 32 degrees Celsius. The team of caregivers and doctors decided to separate May to support special care using the method of parent-child feeding (raising the baby separately in an environment without parents). May was monitored 24/7 in a private room, with full medical and nutritional conditions.
As her health gradually recovered, May became the most inspiring character at Vinpearl Safari. The little chimpanzee had funny behaviors, showed her ability to interact, and "demanded" attention and love from the care staff.
During her time in captivity, she was loved and cared for. Even though she had to live separately, every day, Phong - a zoo employee - regularly rode his bicycle to take May down to the barn to visit her parents. On May's full month, the staff and doctors organized a candle-blowing ceremony to celebrate the little chimpanzee's recovery and health. May also had to follow a daily schedule including mealtimes, playtimes, visiting her parents, breastfeeding time, and climbing time to develop her wild instincts.
Belonging to a high-level animal species, intelligent and strong, in order to be able to take care of May physically and mentally, at Vinpearl Safari, the cage and display area is solidly built with a minimum 5.5 m high wall, smooth and flat with no places to climb to avoid escape, deep surrounding moat, double-layer magnetic door system, solid steel fence...
Now that May can live independently, Mr. Bui Phi Hoang - Head of the animal care department at Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc said that he still regularly takes May to visit her parents. "Looking back on May's journey, I am very touched by the spirit of the staff who directly care for the chimpanzees. They are not only good at their profession, but also love their job, love May, are patient and brave," said Mr. Hoang.
May's parents, whose scientific name is Pan troglodytes, originate from Africa and were brought to Vinpearl Safari under an international conservation program because they are listed as endangered species (EN) according to the IUCN Red List and are in Appendix One of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
In order for Jerry and Baby to reproduce successfully, the caretakers must closely monitor the mother's activities and cycles to calculate the timing and mating plan. After determining that Baby is pregnant with May, the chimpanzee couple's lives are closely monitored and supplemented with foods with high nutritional value to ensure that mother and baby grow and develop normally.

Since its birth, each story and moment of May has been regularly shared and quickly spread. The baby chimpanzee has become the "idol baby" with the largest number of fans on TikTok of Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc with interactions of up to nearly 9 million views, hundreds of thousands of likes and comments. The "May fan" community on Facebook is equally exciting as posts about this individual all have high interactions.
In addition to May, Vinpearl Safari has successfully bred more than 700 individuals, including rare animals such as rhinos, giraffes, zebra antelopes, silvered langurs, binturongs, Pile gibbons...
