The Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that today, May 17, in the North and the area from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen, there was heat and severe heat, some places were especially severe with the highest temperature commonly 36 - 39 degrees Celsius, some places over 40 degrees Celsius.
In particular, Hoa Binh City (Hoa Binh Province) is hot with 41.2 degrees Celsius, Viet Tri City (Phu Tho Province) 40.5 degrees Celsius, Bac Me District (Ha Giang Province) 40.1 degrees Celsius, Ha Dong District (Hanoi) 41.3 degrees Celsius, Do Luong District (Nghe An Province) 40.3 degrees Celsius. Humidity in the above localities is relatively low, commonly 30 - 55%.
This is the second hot day in the second widespread heat wave in the North and Central regions since the beginning of this year. The heat wave is forecast to last about a week.
Notably, the meteorological station in Ha Dong district this afternoon recorded a temperature of up to 41.3 degrees Celsius. This is the highest temperature recorded in Hanoi in May (data was measured relatively within the past 10 years).
According to the forecast, in the North, on May 18, there will be hot and extremely hot weather, some places will be especially extremely hot with the highest temperature commonly ranging from 36 - 39 degrees Celsius, some places will be over 39 degrees Celsius. On May 19, there will be hot weather, some places will be extremely hot with the highest temperature commonly ranging from 35 - 37 degrees Celsius, some places will be over 37 degrees Celsius. The lowest humidity is commonly 45 - 60%.
The area from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen is extremely hot, with some places experiencing especially severe heat, with the highest temperature commonly ranging from 37 - 39 degrees Celsius to over 40 degrees Celsius in some places; the lowest relative humidity commonly ranging from 35 - 45%.
Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of the Weather Forecast Department (National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting), said that this is the longest widespread heat wave since the beginning of the year. In the Northern region and the Central provinces, the peak of the heat wave is concentrated on May 17 and May 21-23. In particular, the mountainous areas in the west of the Central provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Ngai are the most severely hot, with common temperatures ranging from 38-39 degrees Celsius, with some places over 40 degrees Celsius.
"We note that the forecast temperature in the heat bulletins is the temperature measured in the meteorological tent. The actual, outdoor temperature can differ by 2-4 degrees Celsius, or even higher depending on the conditions of the surface such as concrete and asphalt," Mr. Huong emphasized, adding that the heat in the Northern region, from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen, is likely to last until May 23.
