Specifically, the Hanoi People's Committee and the Bac Ninh Provincial People's Committee agreed to propose a study on the urban railway route along the route connecting Gia Binh airport to the center of Hanoi (section in Hanoi).
Implementing the Central Government's direction on the investment policy to build a route connecting Gia Binh airport with Hanoi capital, the Hanoi People's Committee assigned the Department of Planning and Architecture to preside over and coordinate with departments, branches, units, and Bac Ninh province and the Transport Design Consulting Corporation - TEDI (a unit assigned by the Ministry of Transport) to study options for building the route.
Hanoi People's Committee basically agreed on the route plan connecting Gia Binh airport to the city center (the route in Hanoi) according to plan 1 of the proposal from the Department of Planning and Architecture.
The total length of the Bac Ninh - Hanoi route is 49.52km, of which the length of the route through Hanoi is 28.58km (including 8.06km of the newly built route; the section coinciding with the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen expressway/ring road 3, Tu Lien bridge road is about 20.54km).
Notably, the Hanoi People's Committee and the Bac Ninh Provincial People's Committee agreed that the entire route from Gia Binh airport to the center of Hanoi city has a cross-section scale of 100-120m (choosing 120m to match the scale of Bac Ninh province, which is expected to be adjusted from 142m to 120m) and expanding the research on urban development space along both sides of the road from 300-400m.
The project is in line with the orientation in the General Planning for Hanoi Capital Construction to 2030, with a vision to 2050; Adjustment of the General Planning for Hanoi Capital to 2045, with a vision to 2065 that has been approved, ensuring connection with the network of traffic routes identified in approved planning projects such as Ring Road 3, National Highway 5, Giang Bien Bridge - Vinh Tuy - Ring Road 2, Ha Huy Tap Street...
Started by the Ministry of Public Security in December 2024, Gia Binh airport in Xuan Lai commune and Gia Binh town, Gia Binh district, Bac Ninh province, covering an area of 125 hectares, 25 km from Hai Duong city, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. This will be a level 3 helicopter airport, level 3 military, and level 3C civil equivalent.
According to Mr. Le Trung Hieu - Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Planning and Investment, at the end of 2025, Hanoi will start construction of two urban railway lines No. 2.1, Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao section and urban railway line No. 5 (Van Cao - Ngoc Khanh - Lang - Hoa Lac) which are being researched and piloted by Hanoi city for investment according to the TOD model (transport-oriented urban development).
Mr. Hieu added that after the Prime Minister approved the investment policy, the city will take steps to establish an appraisal and submit the investment project for decision. It is expected that the Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao urban railway will be implemented in 7 years and completed in 2032.
According to the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board (MRB), the No. 2 railway line forms an important backbone, connecting the inner city area, Noi Bai International Airport and the northern urban area of Hanoi. This is an important step to build a modern, synchronous and sustainable transport network for the capital, meeting the requirements of socio-economic development and improving the quality of life of the people.
