Adjust to reduce exam subjects
According to the 10th grade admission plan, most localities maintain the exam format with 3 subjects: Math, Literature and Foreign Language. For example, Binh Duong, Can Tho, Da Nang, Hung Yen, Phu Tho, Quang Tri, Quang Ngai, Ho Chi Minh City...
Specifically, the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City has just announced the schedule for the entrance exam for grade 10 of high school for the 2024-2025 school year. Accordingly, the entrance exam for grade 10 of high school for the 2024-2025 school year in Da Nang will take place from June 2-4. Candidates will take 3 subjects: Literature, Foreign Language, and Math.
Notably, after 11 years of implementing the admission method, Quang Nam province has decided to organize an entrance exam to enroll students in grade 10 of public high schools in the 2024-2025 school year. This new method is expected to limit negative factors and ensure objectivity and fairness in assessing and classifying students. The entrance exam for grade 10 of Quang Nam province in 2024-2025 will include 3 subjects: Math, Literature and English. It is expected that about 25,000 grade 9 students will participate in this exam.
In Ho Chi Minh City, the 10th grade entrance exam is expected to take place in early June with 3 subjects: Literature, Math, Foreign Language. The latest point is that students can only register for a maximum of 5 wishes to enter public high schools, a decrease compared to previous years. The reason is that Ho Chi Minh City has stopped enrolling non-specialized 10th grade students in 2 specialized high schools, Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia, according to Circular 05/2023 of the Ministry of Education and Training promulgating regulations on the organization and operation of specialized high schools.
According to the 10th grade high school admission method announced by the Department of Education and Training of Hung Yen province, in 2024, the locality will organize 3 exams to enroll students in grade 10 in early June. In which, Literature will be tested in essay form, with a test time of 120 minutes. Math and English will be tested in multiple choice form, with test times of 90 and 60 minutes, respectively. Thus, this year's admission season in Hung Yen has reduced 2 exams compared to previous years, including: Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry or Biology), Social Sciences (History, Geography or Civic Education).
Along with that, the entrance exam for grade 10 high school in Ninh Binh province for the 2024-2025 school year will reduce the subjects, reduce the time to do the test and the announcement of the third subject will be earlier. This year, candidates will take 3 subjects: Math, Literature and the third subject will be one of the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, English. Last school year, Ninh Binh organized the third exam as a combination test including English and 2 subjects, including 1 subject from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and 1 subject from History, Geography, Civic Education. Thus, compared to the 2023 admission season, the entrance exam for grade 10 in the 2024-2025 school year will have 2 less subjects.
The only locality that tests 4 subjects
Up to this point, Bac Giang is the only locality that has announced the public high school entrance exam plan with 4 exams including: Math, Literature, English and the 4th subject will be randomly drawn from among the subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Civic Education. The results of the drawing will be announced by the Bac Giang Department of Education and Training to students, parents and schools before March 31.
This is also the plan that the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has applied in previous years. According to current regulations, Hanoi organizes entrance exams for grade 10 including 4 subjects: Math, Literature, Foreign Language and the 4th subject will be announced later in March every year. However, in reality, in recent years, due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic on teaching and learning, Hanoi has only organized exams for 3 subjects: Math, Literature, Foreign Language, and eliminated the 4th subject. Whether to take the exam or eliminate the 4th subject is decided each year. The form of admission to grade 10 this year is still entrance exams but the exam subjects and time have not been announced yet. According to the plan of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, on the afternoon of February 22, the Department will meet to discuss enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year.
While many provinces and cities organize entrance exams for grade 10 high school, there are localities that maintain the selection method such as Vinh Long, Dong Thap, Khanh Hoa, Lao Cai... to reduce pressure and costs for society.
For many years, the Ministry of Education and Training has stipulated that the organization of exams, admissions or the combination of exams and admissions to grade 10 is under the initiative of localities. The Departments of Education and Training advise the People's Committees of provinces and cities to approve the admission plan as well as decide on exam subjects, exam characteristics, exam coefficients, and bonus points.
The 10th grade entrance exam for the 2024-2025 school year is also the last exam under the old general education program (2006). From the 2025-2026 school year, the exam will be organized according to the new general education program (2018).
