On the morning of August 17, Dr. Pham Ngoc Thach - Deputy Director of Children's Hospital 2 - informed about this 5-month-old girl XYX. Baby X. was admitted to the hospital with a very large belly, poor appetite, fatigue, labored breathing and lack of activity.

The abdominal ultrasound results showed that the baby had a very large mass of fluid occupying the entire abdomen, with a diameter of up to 80cm at its largest point. The ultrasound did not show the baby's right kidney, so the doctor suspected that the kidney was the giant mass of fluid.

"With no signs of activity in the right renal pelvis and ureter, baby X. was diagnosed by the doctor with giant hydronephrosis causing severe functional impairment, suspected to be due to congenital stenosis of the renal pelvis-ureter junction," added MSc. Dr. Le Nguyen Yen - deputy head of the nephrology department, Children's Hospital 2, the main surgeon for this child patient.

As soon as the diagnosis was made, baby X. was scheduled for surgery to quickly relieve the blockage, hoping to save the remaining right kidney.

In nearly two hours of surgery, the surgical team transferred 1.5 liters of urine to the skin, reducing maximum pressure on the remaining fragile kidney tissue.

Doctors removed the congenital narrowing between the kidney and the ureter. This was the cause of the long-standing blockage, affecting kidney function.

After surgery, the patient gradually recovered, and X's kidney function improved. The released fluid helped him lose one kilogram of weight, his stomach flattened, and he could eat and breathe easily.

According to family members, baby X. was diagnosed with hydronephrosis while still in the womb through a pregnancy ultrasound.

Due to subjectivity, the family did not regularly monitor the child afterwards. When the child's symptoms became worse, including fatigue, loss of appetite, and increasingly large belly, the family took him to the hospital for examination.

According to doctors, prenatal ultrasound helps detect many congenital abnormalities in the fetus, including hydronephrosis. However, when seeing children urinating normally, parents often ignore it.

Dr. Phan Tan Duc, head of the hospital's nephrology department, noted that each person usually has two kidneys. If one kidney is sick, the remaining kidney must "shoulder" the function until it is overloaded.

Therefore, it is impossible to wait for abnormalities to appear, but it is necessary to have the baby diagnosed with hydronephrosis in the fetus examined immediately after birth. Thereby, doctors will closely monitor the baby's hydronephrosis condition to promptly handle it when necessary.

Admitting more than 100 children with hydronephrosis each year

Dr. Pham Ngoc Thach emphasized that early detection of children with hydronephrosis and timely intervention is the only solution to preserve kidney function.

Because hydronephrosis is a condition in which urine accumulates abnormally in the kidneys, putting pressure on the kidney structures and possibly causing kidney damage.

Every year, Children's Hospital 2 receives and treats more than 100 cases of hydronephrosis.

Hydronephrosis puts pressure on the kidneys, affecting their ability to filter and remove waste over time. This can impair kidney function and affect a child's normal development.

This condition is particularly serious due to congenital abnormalities such as stenosis of the junction of the kidney and the ureter. This is one of the common causes of hydronephrosis in children.
