Gia Lam District is located at the eastern gateway of Hanoi city. In the district, there are many key traffic routes, creating a "leverage" to promote socio-economic development, connecting provinces and cities, major economic centers such as: National Highway 1A connecting Bac Ninh province, new National Highway 3 (Hanoi - Thai Nguyen route), National Highway 5B connecting Hung Yen province, Hai Phong city...
In addition, the waterway system through the Red River, Duong River and the railway system to the North and Northeast also create favorable conditions for economic, cultural and social development, trade of goods, creating opportunities to develop a diversified economy.
More than 20 years of accelerating urbanization
Gia Lam is identified as an urban area located in the inner city expansion area to the East of Hanoi Capital, with the main function of developing commercial services, education, medical centers,... associated with industries and high technology in the direction of National Highway 5 and National Highway 1A.
For more than 20 years, Gia Lam district has experienced rapid urbanization, with roads being expanded and newly built, fundamentally changing the appearance of the district. Many industrial parks (IPs), industrial clusters (ICs), and new urban areas have been formed. Specifically, there are currently 3 urban areas (UTs): Dang Xa Urban Area, Trau Quy Urban Area (31ha) and Gia Lam Urban Area (Vinhomes Ocean Park), with very rapid development in terms of infrastructure and transportation systems with many key projects being implemented.
The district has 5 operating industrial parks with a 100% occupancy rate (Phu Thi Industrial Park, Hapro Industrial Park, Ninh Hiep Industrial Park, Bat Trang Industrial Park, Kieu Ky Industrial Park) and 3 industrial parks under construction (Lam Giang Small and Medium Industrial Park, Dinh Xuyen Small Industry Cluster and Phu Thi Industrial Park Phase 2).
In addition, the district has many famous traditional craft villages such as Bat Trang ceramic village, Kim Lan ceramic village; Kieu Ky leather sewing and gold plating village; Ninh Hiep traditional medicine village, lotus jam village; Phu Dong commune ornamental plant and paper flower growing village...
The strong development of industrial parks, industrial clusters as well as traditional craft villages has created stable jobs for local workers and attracted labor from neighboring areas to work and live, contributing significantly to the process of promoting growth and economic restructuring of the district.

Ready for new opportunities
At the 13th Session, the 16th Hanoi People's Council voted to approve the establishment of Gia Lam District and 16 wards under the district. This is an important step, opening up new opportunities for the eastern gateway area of the capital.
According to the planning task of Gia Lam area construction to 2030 with a vision to 2050 approved by Hanoi People's Committee, Gia Lam district will be the new development area of the central urban area; the gateway urban area to the Northeast of Hanoi, where the traffic hubs (roads, railways, waterways) and technical infrastructure of the country and the city are concentrated.
In parallel, the district will also be a freight transit center, a high-quality service center serving industrial development in the East of Hanoi; there will be regional health service training centers; financial and commercial centers; the green corridor of the city along both banks of the Red River and Duong River. Therefore, in the coming years, Gia Lam will focus on developing new areas such as: logistics services, wholesale markets, dry ports... The district will also promote economic restructuring towards services-industry and construction.
In addition, the district focuses on effectively exploiting industrial clusters and craft village production clusters. Continue to promote the development of industries and handicrafts with competitive advantages. Focus on developing key, traditional, and prestigious industrial product groups in the market; focus on product promotion and introduction. Encourage and facilitate businesses to invest in developing industrial and handicraft products with high added value. Strengthen cooperation, linkage, seize opportunities, and promote the development of economic sectors.
Culturally, Gia Lam is a place with a high density of relics, including relics related to Saint Giong (Phu Dong Thien Vuong), Chu Dong Tu, Queen Mother Y Lan... and many famous traditional craft villages such as: Bat Trang ceramics, Kim Lan ceramics; Kieu Ky gold plating, Ninh Hiep traditional medicine...
The landscape along the Red River and Duong River is also an advantage for developing eco-tourism. In particular, Phu Dong Temple worships Saint Giong, one of the "Four Immortals" of the Vietnamese people, and is a special national monument. The Giong Festival at Phu Dong Temple, Gia Lam District (along with the Giong Festival at Soc Temple, Soc Son District) was recognized by UNESCO as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity...
From that strength, Gia Lam will focus on promoting the exploitation and development of cultural tourism, festivals, and craft villages in a professional, modern, synchronous, sustainable and integrated direction. Developing cultural industry and tourism into a spearhead economic sector, especially ecological cultural tourism; closely combining traditional craft villages with the development of tourism services, promoting the value of the "Red River civilization".

The district will focus on building a tourism industry with modern facilities, rich, diverse, distinctive, high-quality, branded and prestigious tourism products, meeting the needs of domestic and international tourists. Gia Lam also sets the goal of turning culture into a new development resource, worthy of the thousand-year tradition of Thang Long - Hanoi; contributing to building the capital as a center of convergence and cultural crystallization of the whole country.
When becoming a district of the capital, Gia Lam will develop agricultural production in specialized areas, according to the approved planning. In particular, the district will exploit and develop the field of ecological and high-tech agriculture based on the application of advanced science and technology, digital transformation; build modern countryside, civilized farmers, associated with preserving and promoting cultural and historical values. Support vocational training, develop a modern, flexible and integrated labor market, and improve the quality of human resources.
In particular, the district will continue to invest in the synchronous development of the socio-economic infrastructure system, gradually modernizing it in conjunction with environmental protection; continue to improve environmental quality indicators in the next phase, promptly resolve issues of waste and emissions, focus on treatment, improvement, and enhancement of environmental quality in residential areas.
Along with investing in socio-economic development, Gia Lam continues to implement policies on innovation, streamlining the apparatus; building a modern urban government model; improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the government apparatus. The district will promote the synchronous and effective implementation of administrative reform, application of information technology in the operations of state agencies, development of e-government towards digital government and ensuring network information security.
At the same time, improve the State management capacity of all levels of government. Build a contingent of responsible, politically steadfast, highly professional, clean, dedicated, dynamic, creative cadres, civil servants, and public employees with innovative thinking and strategic vision to meet the requirements of the tasks, especially the leaders and managers at all levels. Innovate mass mobilization work, the working methods of the Fatherland Front, socio-political organizations, especially the activities of social supervision and criticism; consolidate the great national unity bloc; promote the cultural and revolutionary traditions and the will of self-reliance and self-reliance of the People.
With the above roadmap, we believe that when Gia Lam district is established, it will promote its potential and advantages and be a favorable opportunity for the locality to break through, develop sustainably, and become a civilized and modern urban area of the capital.
