In the first nine months of the year, authorities discovered 131 cases of smuggling animal products and live chickens into Vietnam, an increase of 14.5 times compared to 2022.
The data was just announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in an online forum on combating livestock and poultry smuggling on the afternoon of October 17. Accordingly, with the number of smuggling cases increasing rapidly, in the first 9 months of the year, authorities seized nearly 160,000 animals, nearly 44,000 poultry eggs, and more than 116,000 kg of animal products.
According to estimates by the Vietnam Poultry Association (VIPA), the amount of live chickens illegally imported across the border is up to 200,000-250,000 tons per year. Every month, tens of thousands of tons of discarded chickens are smuggled across the border into our country.
In Quang Ninh province, on October 1, Tra Co Border Guard Station discovered a Chinese man transporting nearly 18,000 breeding chickens to the sea of Tra Co ward, Mong Cai city to bring them deep into Vietnam for consumption.
In Lang Son, Mr. Luong Trong Quynh, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, said that recently, many shipments of smuggled goods into Vietnam have been punished; administrative fines of over 214 million VND have been imposed; tons of chickens and ducks of unknown origin have been confiscated and destroyed.
Mr. Quynh assessed that smuggling activities are increasing with increasingly sophisticated methods. They take advantage of the night and shift change of border authorities to carry small quantities through border fence areas to villages and hamlets in border communes, then transport them by motorbike along provincial roads and National Highway 1A to inland provinces for consumption. Some reckless subjects even rammed their motorbikes into authorities on duty.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Phan Quang Minh, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Health, said that smuggling activities are alarming. Smuggled animal products are brought across the border areas between Vietnam and Laos and Cambodia, increasing the risk of infection and spreading dangerous diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, lumpy skin disease, etc., leading to the risk of seriously affecting the domestic livestock industry, disease prevention and control work and people's health.
To resolve the above situation, Mr. Phan Quang Minh suggested that the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of National Defense, the Customs, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade strengthen inspections and grasp the situation of ringleaders and networks; strictly handle illegal trading and transportation. On the local side, Mr. Minh recommended counting livestock and poultry to promptly detect fluctuations; coordinate with local veterinary management agencies to trace the origin of animals to carry out transportation quarantine.
