The German government has allocated a new military aid package to Ukraine, but has also stated that future support for Kiev is only possible if a decision is made to allocate separate funding.

RIA Novosti reported that Germany's new military aid package for Ukraine includes 56 MRAP armored vehicles, IRIS-T SLM and IRIS-T SLS missiles, as well as 300 HF-1 attack unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and many other weapons.

There are also 51 Vector reconnaissance UAVs and spare parts, 245 RQ-35 Heidrun reconnaissance UAVs, 29 Songbird reconnaissance UAVs, 14 Hornet XR reconnaissance UAVs, 2 Wisent mine clearance vehicles and spare parts, as well as wool blankets and bandages.

Berlin also sent Kiev ammunition for Leopard 1 tanks and Marder infantry fighting vehicles, 41,000 ammunition units for Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, four Zuzana 2 self-propelled guns, as well as 50,000 155 mm artillery shells and 2,000 122 mm artillery shells.

Germany is currently Ukraine’s second-largest arms supplier after the United States. Earlier this month, a spokesman for the Western European country’s cabinet said Berlin had provided Kiev with nearly 44 billion euros ($46 billion) in aid since the conflict began in early 2022.

However, on the sidelines of the extraordinary summit in Paris on February 17, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed that the country's necessary and continuous support for Ukraine is only possible if we adopt a separate funding decision.

"Any attempt to finance this by cutting the country's budget, cutting investment in infrastructure or cutting social cohesion is doomed to failure and is not supported by our people," the German leader was quoted as saying by Welt television channel.

Also related to Ukraine, on February 17, the United Nations Security Council (UN) met to discuss the conflict situation in the context of new developments.

Speaking at the meeting, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding Miroslav Jenča reaffirmed that any peace agreement in Ukraine must respect the country's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

Recognizing that diplomatic efforts should focus on achieving a just and lasting peace, the United Nations encourages dialogue between the parties concerned and welcomes any genuine efforts and initiatives with the full participation of Ukraine and Russia aimed at de-escalating the conflict and minimizing the impact of the crisis on civilians.
