In early April 2024, “mysterious vehicles” appeared on the Ukrainian front lines. The Russian military is learning from the fighting on the Ukrainian battlefield, where drones have proven to be highly effective in combat. In response to the massive use of drones, both Russian and Ukrainian forces began to enhance the defense capabilities of their tanks and various vehicles. On the Russian side, Russian military engineers have reached new heights.
In an effort to protect their vehicles from the threat of Ukrainian drones, Russian forces began installing special nets on their roofs. Tanks were also equipped with mobile electronic warfare systems.
In early April, Russian engineers revealed a new invention. Russian T-72 tanks with huge protective “boxes” were spotted participating in the battle in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. The tanks are equipped with a solid metal protective structure. Images of tanks with solid protection were filmed as they led armored groups in attacks near the village of Krasnogorovka in the direction of Donetsk.
On April 16, video footage from the battlefield in the direction of Avdeevka showed an upgraded version of the tank. Another Russian T-72 tank was seen covered in protective shields, but unlike previous models, it has enhanced mine protection and is equipped with an extremely powerful electronic warfare system with eight antennas.
The constant threat of FPV drone attacks has forced warring parties to use unconventional methods to protect their armored vehicles. The protection devices are aimed at maximizing the safety of the equipment and crew from enemy drone attacks. The flexibility of warring parties and the ability to adapt to new challenges is always essential to achieving any victory on the battlefield. Modern wars are no exception. Whether Russia can make a difference by introducing this upgraded tank into the battlefield is a question that only time will tell.
