Having endured a harsh and brutal war, the soldiers of the Ho Chi Minh Army returned from various battlefields, integrating into new lives, but still facing difficult circumstances that require assistance and support. Stemming from this, over the years, the "Comradeship Fund" has been effectively implemented by Veterans' Associations at all levels in the province, contributing to strengthening bonds among members, providing mutual support, and helping each other develop economically and stabilize their lives.
In 2024, the Veterans' Associations at all levels in Lam Thao district demonstrated their responsibility, closely adhering to the district's and local political tasks, and effectively implementing the set targets and tasks. The Association actively mobilized cadres and members to participate in the movement to jointly build advanced and model new rural areas and civilized urban areas, and actively contributed to funds such as: the Veterans' Solidarity Fund; the humanitarian and charitable fund; and the fund for the poor. At the same time, the Association coordinated with socio-political organizations to build three "Comradeship Houses" for members with difficult housing circumstances, totaling nearly 200 million VND.
Representatives from the district leadership and the Lam Thao District Veterans Association presented a financial contribution from the "Comradeship Fund" to veteran Nguyen Dinh Thien.
These days, the home of war veteran Nguyen Dinh Thien in Trung Chinh area, Phung Nguyen commune, is even warmer because everyone in the neighborhood comes to chat and share the joy that his new house is now complete.
Mr. Thien enlisted in the army in 1977 and was discharged in 1982. He participated in combat and was wounded in the Cambodian battlefield, sustaining a 4/4 disability. Due to his poor health, difficult family economic circumstances, and living in a severely dilapidated house, the Veterans Association of the district and local authorities decided to provide partial funding for the construction of a "Comradeship House" for Mr. Thien.
The house, built with an area of 90m2, features a flat roof covered with heat-resistant tiles, a tiled floor, and other facilities such as an outbuildings, kitchen, yard, gate, and fence, at a total cost of over 300 million VND. Of this amount, the District Veterans Association contributed 40 million VND, the Phung Nguyen Commune Veterans Association contributed 2 million VND, the Commune Red Cross contributed 1 million VND, and the remainder came from family members, relatives, and benefactors.
Mr. Thien said emotionally: "This is a particularly meaningful gift in my life as the New Year approaches. Even in my dreams, I never imagined I would one day live in such a spacious house. I hope that many people like me will receive help from comrades, organizations, and philanthropists to have a sturdy place to live, so they can work and produce with peace of mind and improve their lives."
The Provincial Veterans Association at the house handover ceremony for veteran Nguyen Van Am.
Like veteran Nguyen Dinh Thien, veteran Nguyen Van Am, from Zone 16, Dong Thanh commune, Thanh Ba district, enlisted in 1975. During the fighting to defend the Fatherland, he was wounded and received a disability rating of 4/4. Upon returning to live in his hometown, his family faced extreme hardship; the couple lived in a small house of less than 30 square meters, with leaks and scorching heat. Concerned about their comrade's plight, the Provincial Veterans Association mobilized support to build a new house for Mr. Am, with a total cost of nearly 200 million VND, of which the Provincial Veterans Association contributed 50 million VND from its "Comradeship Fund".
Over the past period, the Provincial Veterans Association has done a good job of mobilizing and attracting many organizations, units, businesses, philanthropists, and a large number of members to join hands and support in various forms. In the past 5 years, the Provincial Veterans Association and its branches at the grassroots level have provided financial support for the construction and repair of "Comradeship Houses" for nearly 300 veterans and meritorious individuals with particularly difficult circumstances, helping them have stable housing with a total value of over 15.9 billion VND.
These "Comradeship Houses" have contributed to realizing the dream of secure housing, demonstrating the spirit of readiness to share with comrades in any circumstances. Through this, the role and position of the Association in caring for the material and spiritual lives of its members are enhanced, contributing to the successful implementation of poverty reduction programs and the elimination of temporary and dilapidated housing in the province.
