Mekong Delta tourism development is not commensurate with its potential

Tạp chí Doanh NghiệpTạp chí Doanh Nghiệp29/03/2024

DNVN - Tourism products and tourism methods are similar, have not fully promoted the specific strengths of the locality, and the connection of tours is not really attractive...; these are the limitations that the tourism industry in the Mekong Delta needs to overcome and have appropriate and effective solutions to develop tourism in the coming time.

On March 29, in Can Tho city, Kinh te & Do thi Newspaper in collaboration with the Mekong Delta Tourism Association and Can Tho City Department of Tourism organized a workshop: "Building and developing tours - routes and special tourism products of the Mekong Delta".

Phó Chủ tịch UBND thành phố Cần Thơ Nguyễn Thực Hiện phát biểu tại hội thảo.

With an area of about 40,000km2, a total population of more than 17 million people including Kinh, Hoa, Khmer, Cham ethnic groups... unique community customs and practices, generous, affectionate, hospitable people, the Mekong Delta is considered a land with great potential for tourism development, a "safe, friendly, quality, attractive" destination for visitors from near and far.

However, tourism development in the Mekong Delta is still not commensurate with its natural advantages and has not met the expectations of local authorities for this "smokeless industry".

The workshop "Building and developing tours, routes and specific tourism products in the Mekong Delta" was held to listen to the opinions of experts, scientists, managers and organizations and individuals in the tourism business in assessing the current situation, proposing solutions to develop tours, routes and specific tourism products of the region, shaping the main and typical tours, routes and products to effectively connect destinations in the chain of cooperation to develop tourism in the whole Mekong Delta, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Loi - Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Editor-in-Chief of the Economic and Urban Newspaper said.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Loi hopes that at the workshop, experts, management agencies, local functional sectors... will correctly assess the potential strengths, existing limitations and propose solutions to promote and develop tourism in the Mekong Delta, especially in building and developing tours, routes and specific tourism products in the Mekong Delta, in order to actively contribute to developing tourism into a spearhead economic sector, increasing revenue for tourism businesses and people working in tourism.

According to the report at the conference, by the end of 2023, international tourists to Vietnam will reach about 12.6 million, 3.4 times higher than in 2022, exceeding the forecast of 4.6 million visitors at the beginning of the year. Domestic tourists will reach about 108 million, up 5.8% compared to 2022. Revenue from tourism is estimated at 37.8 trillion VND, up 52.5% compared to 2022.

Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thuc Hien said that in 2023, the city's tourism industry will welcome more than 5.9 million visitors, an increase of 17% over the same period in 2022; of which, overnight guests will reach over 2.9 million. International overnight guests will reach nearly 159,000. Total tourism revenue will reach over VND5,400 billion, an increase of 32% over the same period.

However, the tourism industry of Can Tho city in particular and the Mekong Delta in general is facing difficulties and challenges, namely tourism products and tourism methods are quite similar, not fully exploiting the potential strengths of the specific characteristics of each locality...

“Along with other localities in the Mekong Delta, Can Tho city is focusing on developing high-quality, diverse, experiential and value-added tourism products in line with market orientation and the needs of each target group; building and implementing pilot models for developing eco-tourism, rural tourism, etc., gradually positioning the city's unique tourism brand,” said the Vice Chairman of the Can Tho City People's Committee.

Regarding this issue, Dr. Tran Huu Hiep - Vice President of the Mekong Delta Tourism Association said: tourism space and tourism products are two important issues that need to be invested in and exploited in tourism development. Connecting space and integrating tourism products is the way to make tourism more attractive.

The Mekong Delta with its unique tourism space and unique tourism products "Mekong River World" associated with landscape values, indigenous culture, ecotourism, unique cuisine, regional approaches, tourism value chain linkages and effective regional coordination mechanisms will create many unique and attractive values.

Therefore, to develop tourism, according to Dr. Tran Huu Hiep, it is necessary to focus on 3 breakthroughs: building a policy mechanism to coordinate regional linkages for tourism development; creating material resources for investment; developing specific products and human resources for regional tourism. On that basis, Dr. Tran Huu Hiep proposed to establish a Mekong Delta Tourism Development Coordination Board with the main task of coordinating general tourism activities of the whole region, unifying development orientations and building linkage regulations...; promoting the formation of a Mekong Delta Tourism Development Support Fund; strengthening the connection of tourism markets, tourist demand with tourist destinations, routes, and tours to form "Clusters - tourism industry clusters"

“Linking tourism spaces and integrating regional tourism products with tourism infrastructure and tourism human resources are the pillars of the “smokeless industry” that is expected to overcome challenges so that tourism in the Mekong Delta can develop strongly in the coming time,” Dr. Hiep emphasized.
