Can Tho seeks solutions to create clear changes in human rights work

On August 28, the Steering Committee (SC) on Human Rights of Can Tho City coordinated with the Government's Standing Office on Human Rights to organize a training conference on human rights work in 2024.

The conference was chaired by Vice Chairman of the People's Committee, Head of the Human Rights Steering Committee of Can Tho City Nguyen Ngoc He with the participation of 250 delegates including members of the Steering Committee, representatives of leaders, and human rights monitoring officers from city departments and agencies.

At the conference, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Ngoc He said that in recent times, Can Tho has achieved good results in socio-economic development, constantly improving the material and spiritual life of the people. In the first 6 months of 2024, the security and order situation in the city continued to be maintained stable.

Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) in 2024 is estimated to increase by 5.73% over the same period last year (increased by 4.68% in the first quarter and 6.74% in the second quarter), creating jobs for 34,178 workers, reaching 67.54% of the plan, up 22.17% over the same period in 2023.

People's lives have been improved and social security work has been given attention by authorities at all levels; the new rural construction program in recent years has had a positive impact, contributing to improving the lives of people in rural areas, promoting the development of the economic and social infrastructure system in rural areas.

The City Human Rights Steering Committee has done a good job of advising the City Party Committee and the City People's Committee on solutions to stabilize the situation, paying attention to ensuring social security, actively implementing policies for people with meritorious services, heroic Vietnamese mothers, relatives of war invalids, martyrs and vulnerable and disadvantaged groups. The city has provided regular social assistance outside the community to 42,792 social protection beneficiaries with a total monthly amount of more than 24 billion VND, regular preferential subsidies to 4,942 people with meritorious services to the revolution, built and organized a handover ceremony for 30 gratitude houses for policy families and people with meritorious services to the revolution who have difficulty in housing.

Delegates listened to the reporter present two topics: Human rights work in the new situation and Current situation of new religious phenomena, "strange religions", "evil religions" and some solutions for work in the coming time.

The conference provided practical information and knowledge on human rights protection, thereby helping grassroots officials better implement the work of ensuring and promoting human rights. Training and guidance on the implementation of human rights work by reporters is an important premise and basis for proposing policies and measures to create clear changes in the coming time.

Major General Nguyen Van Ky, Deputy Chief of the Permanent Office on Human Rights, affirmed that human rights is a common task of the entire political system, closely linked to the grassroots level, therefore, it requires the joint efforts and coordination of departments, branches and sectors in protecting and ensuring human rights.

Accordingly, Major General Nguyen Van Ky requested the Can Tho City Human Rights Steering Committee to continue advising on the development of programs and plans for economic and social development, poverty reduction, social protection, social security, labor and employment policies; Prioritize policies for vulnerable groups; ensure freedom of belief and religion, and rights for ethnic minorities; proactively neutralize activities that take advantage of democracy and human rights issues by hostile forces, especially activities that collude inside and outside, directing sabotage against Vietnam at times of important political events; grasp the situation, thoroughly handle issues related to religion, ethnicity, complaints, and worker security, and not let them become hot spots for hostile forces to exploit and sabotage.

At the same time, the Deputy Chief of the Permanent Office for Human Rights also requested departments, branches and sectors to further enhance their responsibility in organizing and implementing human rights work in the city, promptly and effectively advising on solutions to further promote the work of ensuring human rights at the grassroots level.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc He directed delegates participating in the Conference to be responsible for disseminating and thoroughly understanding the contents and issues raised by the reporters, and to help cadres in their units and localities clearly understand the position and importance of human rights work, and at the same time identify key and fundamental issues to better apply in their advisory role to effectively implement this work.
