Experts predict that global pepper output will continue to decline in 2025, marking the fourth consecutive year of decline. This decline reflects the fact that pepper is no longer a staple crop for many farmers, while climate change and extreme weather reduce productivity and increase production costs. However, pepper prices in Vietnam remain stable at around VND140,000 - 150,000/kg, thanks to stable demand from major markets such as the US and Europe.

China, although reducing pepper imports from Vietnam in 2024, faces low inventories and is expected to resume purchases after the Lunar New Year, when Vietnam’s main harvest begins. Brazil’s pepper output is forecast to recover, while Indonesia and India may reduce output due to weather impacts and investment difficulties, causing many Vietnamese farmers to limit investment in pepper.

People in Dak Nong province take care of their pepper gardens.

Mr. Nguyen Tan Cong - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nam Yang Cooperative (Gia Lai) said that currently, after learning many lessons, instead of choosing pure cultivation, people now focus on models of growing pepper intercropped, polycultured with coffee and fruit trees.

Developing pepper in the direction of intercropping and polyculture will be sustainable, thereby helping farmers reduce investment costs and limit disease risks, moving towards safe agriculture. At that time, people will not overuse pesticides and chemical fertilizers on crops, instead using biological products and organic fertilizers to bring durability to the garden, helping to improve the quality of pepper products to enter the world market.

The International Pepper Community (IPC) said that the pepper market in the last week of January had a positive outlook, with no country reporting a price decrease.
