According to the revised regulations applied from the 11th ASEAN Para Games, at this year's congress, the organizing committee continues to award two sets of medals for each weight category, including the best weightlifting performance and the best total lift performance.
Starting with the absolute victory of female athlete Dang Thi Linh Phuong, winning both gold medals in the 50kg category, male colleague Le Van Cong (men's 49kg category) also did the same with the best weightlifting of 168kg, and a total lift of 496kg.
Thus, in 6 consecutive ASEAN Para Games from 2007 to present, this athlete from Ha Tinh has proven that he has no rivals in the regional arena.
He is also the first Southeast Asian athlete to win a gold medal at a Paralympic Games (Rio 2016, Brazil) in addition to holding the world record of 183kg that he set in Brazil.
Adding the "double" championships of Nguyen Binh An (men's 54kg), Nguyen Van Hung (men's 72kg) and Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan (women's 55kg),
According to former head coach Nguyen Hong Phuc, this is a positive sign for the Vietnamese para-weightlifting team after many recent changes, in which many players suffered injuries and had to be absent from major sporting events.
After the 12th ASEAN Para Games, the Vietnamese para-weightlifting team will continue to participate in the world championship in Dubai (UAE) in August, to accumulate points for the 2024 Paris Paralympics and prepare to compete at the ASIAN Para Games in Hangzhou (China) next October.
