According to annual tradition, on the occasion of Thanh Minh festival, the people of Chi Cong commune (Tuy Phong district) will worship the saints to remember their merits as well as pray for national peace and prosperity, favorable weather, and bountiful harvests. This event is imbued with traditional national culture and is a festival that attracts not only locals but also tourists from near and far to admire and experience many unique activities here.
The Thanh Minh festival of Duong land usually falls on April 4 or 5 every year. The festival is usually held for 5 days, including the activities of Opening the Scriptures, Asking for Sanh, Offering to the God Emperor, Asking for the cakes offered by the people, Offering the Great Ceremony, Offering food, Pushing the cake cart, Opening the Opera Performance Ceremony... After the Lunar New Year, the Thanh Minh festival is the second biggest holiday of Duong people. During these days, most fishermen anchor their boats, set up their nets, and those who work far away also take the opportunity to return home to reunite with their families, visit graves, and eagerly flock to the temple to attend the Thanh Minh ceremony.
From early morning, on all the roads and alleys, many three-wheeled vehicles come to many houses to pick up the cakes and bring them to the temple for the ceremony. The cake towers are usually made from various types of cakes such as banh tet, banh chung, cakes, soft drinks, fruits, etc. If you pay attention, you will see that on each tower there is a flag with the name of the contributor. The colorful cakes contribute to making the festival more solemn, demonstrating the prosperity, solidarity and closeness of the people of the coastal region.
According to local people, in Chi Cong commune, there are two places for worshiping and organizing the xo co ritual: Hung Vuong Temple (Ha Thuy 2 village) and Quan Thanh Temple (Hiep Duc 1 village). Of these, Hung Vuong Temple is crowded with people and the scale of the ceremony is much larger than the other places. The Thanh Minh festival in Duong is more special than other festivals in other places because it has the xo co ritual (cake making), creating a bustling, exciting atmosphere filled with laughter from local people.
The Duong people attach great importance to this festival, because it is closely linked to morality and culture, and is the duty of descendants to remember the merits of their ancestors. This is also the common death anniversary for everyone to have the opportunity to show filial piety, repay the kindness and gratitude of those who gave birth to them. At the same time, this is also an occasion for fishermen to pray for a year of favorable weather, fishing trips full of fish and shrimp, and a prosperous life for fishermen.
