Female student who beat her friend and was suspended from school for 1 year in Hau Giang has dropped out of school.

Suspended from school and dropped out

Recently, in Ninh Thuan, a 7th grade female student at Ngo Quyen Primary and Secondary School was forced to suspend her from school for 2 weeks after beating a friend. Phan Ngoc Hien Secondary School in Ca Mau suspended an 8th grade female student who beat a friend in the classroom for 1 week; at the same time, the student who was beaten, filmed, and those who watched were reprimanded.

Under Thanh Nien Newspaper's articles about students being suspended from school after school violence incidents, many newspaper readers are wondering. Reader Lai Quang Tan expressed his opinion: "Is this form of discipline really effective in terms of deterrence andeducation ? What happens if the children cannot keep up with the program after being forced to leave school for a week? Who will be responsible?"

Many readers must remember the incident that happened a few months ago, the case of a female student VHY at Cay Duong High School (Hau Giang) who beat her friend and insulted her teacher and was suspended from school for a year. But this disciplinary action was no longer meaningful because the female student dropped out of school, even though her homeroom teacher came to her house to persuade her to go back to school.

Therefore, public opinion has more and more conflicting opinions about the form of disciplinary suspension for students. Because school is like a second home for students. Children being suspended from school, forced to temporarily stop studying at school is no different from kicking the child out of the house. What will they do if they do not go to school, they can be lured and enticed into worse behavior, such suspension has no educational meaning for students?

If naughty students are not allowed to go to school, where do they go?

With nearly 40 years of experience, Mr. Do Trung Lai, a former math teacher at Tan Chau High School, Tan Chau Town, An Giang, although now retired, still remembers the times he worked as a homeroom teacher, meeting hyperactive students and having conflicts in class. According to Mr. Do Trung Lai, the school always has solutions to propagate and prevent violence in schools. However, young people are often impulsive. When resolving student conflicts, the teacher must first find out the reasons for the students' disciplinary violations, why they fought, why they made mistakes..., and analyze who is right and who is wrong.

"When a school suspends a student, depending on the parents' perception, some people will advise and teach their children so that they understand where they went wrong and what they need to fix. But there are many families where the parents are in difficult circumstances, the parents work far away, or the parents are no longer together, the parents neglect their children... so there is no one to remind or teach them. So if these students are forced to drop out of school and stay at home without anyone to supervise them, where will they go and what will they do during that time?", Mr. Lai wondered.

Female student who beat her friend in Ca Mau was suspended from school for 1 week

A math teacher with nearly 40 years of teaching experience said that a reasonable way to discipline students is to still let them go to school. Even though they are not allowed to go to class with their friends, students who violate the rules are still allowed to go to the library and the self-study room. They can read books, write down their thoughts and feelings, why they made mistakes, what their thoughts and wishes are. The difficulty for a teacher is to understand the thoughts and feelings of their students. To teach good students, one must understand them. Or teachers can let students read good books, let them write down the lessons they have learned from them, and talk to them more.

According to Mr. Lai, the education sector is currently building happy schools, paying attention to students' feelings. Such punishment can help students not feel inferior and self-conscious in front of friends and teachers and can influence them...

Suspension from school is not wrong legally, but…

Master Pham Thanh Tuan, a civics teacher at Dien Hong Secondary and High School, District 10 (HCMC), a member of the civics council of the HCM City Department of Education and Training, said that when a student violates discipline, the school's disciplinary council will consider and possibly discipline the student. At the highest level, the student may be suspended from school for a period of time, which is in accordance with the guidance circular of the Ministry of Education and Training.

"Legally, the above disciplinary method is not wrong. But if students do not go to school for 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 year... then they will lose knowledge. Who will manage them? If parents are still struggling with life, no one will manage them, they do not go to school, do not have contact with teachers, friends, they can be dragged into, fall into social evils, have inferiority complex..., the bad things will pile up even more. So not only does it not influence the student but also makes the student's situation more negative," said Master Tuan.

Students of Bui Thi Xuan High School, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City were punished by going to the library to read books.

According to Master Tuan, we need more reasonable, emotional, and humane ways of handling things. Such as educating, propagating, and reminding students once, twice, or three times before disciplining them. For students who commit mistakes, we can let them go to school to read books related to their behavior, and record their lessons and feelings.

"If someone hits a friend, you can let them read books about humanity. If they litter in the schoolyard, you can let them plant and take care of trees. For students who violate discipline so seriously that they are forced to suspend their studies for a period of time, as is currently being done in some units in Ho Chi Minh City, that student is still allowed to go to school. Even though they are not allowed to go to class with their friends, that student can still sit in the supervisor's room, borrow books from friends to review their lessons. Or that student can talk and receive psychological counseling from the school psychologist, and participate in school work that is suitable to their abilities, such as rearranging books in the library, planting and taking care of trees in the school... In my opinion, these are humane ways of discipline that can influence students," said Master Tuan.

What does the Circular of the Ministry of Education and Training stipulate about suspending students from school?

Clause 2, Article 38 of Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDĐT of the Charter of Secondary Schools, High Schools and Multi-level General Schools (effective from November 1, 2020) stipulates that students who commit violations during the learning and training process will be educated or disciplined in the following forms:

  • Remind, support, and directly help students overcome their shortcomings;
  • Reprimand and notify parents to coordinate and help students overcome shortcomings;
  • Temporarily suspend school for a period of time and implement other educational measures according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.
