Thousands of students expelled, warning: What grades will result in expulsion?

(Dan Tri) - At some schools, students forced to drop out due to poor academic performance can apply to be considered or register for a lower level program.


In just a short period of time, two universities in Ho Chi Minh City have forced thousands of students to drop out and warn them due to poor academic results.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, hundreds of students were forced to drop out of school or given academic warnings due to poor academic results in the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year.

Of these, 41 cases were forced to drop out of school and 75 cases were given academic warnings, all stemming from poor academic results.

According to regulations of Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, students are given academic warning based on a number of conditions such as the total number of failed credits in the semester exceeding 50% of the registered credits in the semester, or the total number of outstanding credits from the beginning of the course exceeding 24 credits;

Semester average score is below 0.80 for the first semester of the course, below 1.0 for the following semesters; Cumulative average score is below 1.2 for first-year students, below 1.4 for second-year students, below 1.6 for third-year students or below 1.8 for students in the following years.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, this school year, about 2,000 students from courses 2021, 2022 and 2023 from many majors were expelled, warned, and placed on academic probation.

There are 88 students forced to drop out of school due to their average score of two consecutive semesters (semester 1 and semester 2 of the 2023-2024 school year) being below 1.0 or having the required number of credits.

In addition, nearly 1,000 students are expected to be placed on academic warning due to having a second semester GPA below 1.0. More than 900 other students are also on probation due to poor academic performance and credit debt.

According to the regulations of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, the school conducts academic warning and academic probation at the end of each main semester.

Students are placed on academic warning if their GPA is below 0.8 for the first semester of the course; below 1.0 for subsequent semesters.

Students are placed on academic probation if the total number of credits not achieved in a semester exceeds 50% of the registered credits in the semester; or the total number of credits outstanding from the beginning of the course exceeds 24; or the cumulative GPA is below 1.2 for first-year students, below 1.4 for second-year students, below 1.6 for third-year students, below 1.8 for students in subsequent years.

Students are forced to drop out of school if they receive 3 consecutive academic warnings; study time exceeds the prescribed limit; and are disciplined for violating regulations according to the regulations.

According to the information on handling and academic discipline of the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), students can receive academic discipline forms of warning level 1, level 2; forced suspension of study and forced expulsion.

Students are given an academic warning if they violate one of the following conditions: Do not accumulate the minimum number of credits (10 credits per semester, not including the suspended semester); Have a cumulative GPA

If the student does not commit any violations in the next semester, he/she will be automatically removed from the academic warning list. If the violation occurs in 2 consecutive semesters, the student will be given a level 2 academic warning. If the violation occurs in 3 consecutive semesters, the student will be forced to leave school.

Students are required to suspend their studies if they are not registered for courses and/or do not have an official semester schedule.

Students will be forced to drop out of school if they violate one of the following conditions: Poor academic performance (receiving academic warning for 3 consecutive semesters); Having an average score of 0 in the previous semester and not registering for courses in the current semester (voluntarily leaving school); Suspending or being forced to suspend continuously for more than 2 main semesters; Not registering for courses and/or not having an official timetable for 2 consecutive main semesters (not counting the semester for which the suspension is requested); The maximum training period has expired.

According to the regulations of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, students who are forced to drop out of school due to poor academic performance must submit a request for review and send it to the faculty office for review and transfer to the training department.

Students may be considered for readmission if they have achieved the minimum required cumulative GPA and cumulative credits.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, after each semester, the school will issue a warning about academic performance to students with poor academic performance. This warning is to help students with poor academic performance know; from there, they can have a suitable study plan to be able to graduate within the allowed study period.

A student's academic performance is warned based on one of the following conditions:

The total number of credits not achieved in a semester exceeds 50% of the registered volume of the semester, or the total number of credits outstanding from the beginning of the course exceeds 24 credits; the average semester score is below 0.80 for the first semester of the course, below 1.00 for the following semesters;

Cumulative GPA below 1.20 for first-year students, below 1.40 for second-year students, below 1.60 for third-year students, or below 1.80 for students in subsequent years and final year.

After each semester, the school will review and notify students who are forced to leave school if they fall into one of the following cases: Having more than 2 consecutive warnings about academic performance; Exceeding the maximum time allowed to study at the school according to regulations; Being disciplined for the second time for taking exams for someone else or having someone else take exams for them or being disciplined to the extent of being removed from the school's student list; Voluntarily dropping out of school for 2 consecutive semesters.

In case a student is expelled from school according to regulations and wants to study a lower program, depending on each case and the level of violation, he/she will be considered for admission and have the credits already passed reserved.
