Since the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, there have been many cases of school violence that have caused great concern, anxiety, and indignation in society.
A series of school violence cases
On November 12, the press reported that at Nguyen Hue Secondary School (Thuan An Commune, Dak Mil District, Dak Nong), after the flag-raising ceremony on the morning of November 11 at this school, due to a conflict, 2 male students stabbed 2 female students, seriously injuring them and requiring emergency hospitalization.
Many cases of students fighting come from very simple causes.
On the afternoon of October 20, a female student of class 7/3 at Ngo Gia Tu Secondary School (An Phu Commune, Pleiku City, Gia Lai) was taken by a group of classmates to the field behind the school, buried in the ground, beaten, and filmed stripping. The following afternoon, October 21, the group waited for her to return to the same location, continued to beat her, buried her in the mud, pulled her hair, and stripped her clothes.
On the evening of October 19, due to a previous conflict, a male student of Anh Xuan Secondary School (Nam Dan District, Nghe An) was forced by his classmates to sit down and put dirt in his mouth. After eating the first handful of dirt, the male student was forced to continue smoking.
On the morning of October 17 at An Thoi High School (Mo Cay Nam District, Ben Tre), a 10th grade male student was beaten up in class and had to be hospitalized.
On October 12, at Bac Son Secondary and High School (Tuyen Hoa, Quang Binh), a male student was beaten by two classmates right in the classroom and had to be hospitalized...
And there are probably many other cases that schools handle "internally". It can be seen that school violence is increasing in number, aggressiveness, and cruelty.
Stopping school is… quitting school with a valid reason!
This situation requires quick intervention, first of all from the education sector.
For middle and high school students, the highest form of discipline according to current regulations is "forced suspension from school for a period of time and implementation of other educational measures according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training".
In the past, when students were expelled from school, they realized the heaviness, pressure, and loneliness of not being able to go to school with their friends. Now, even though they have to temporarily stop studying at school, with their cell phones in hand, disciplined students still connect with their "comrades", still play games... Those who are lazy to study consider the time they are expelled from school as... a legitimate reason to miss school!?
Some schools require that during disciplinary time, students come to school to clean the classroom, read books, etc. For students with "personality", this measure is not very effective, students cope, so after the disciplinary period, they return to their old ways.
Strong, innovative, and strict solutions are needed from the education sector to combat school violence.
Need fundamental, strong solutions to treat school violence
This situation requires fundamental, strong, breakthrough, and strict solutions from the education sector, at the same time, close coordination with parents, localities, and ministries and functional agencies.
In serious cases, it is not enough to just expel them from school, but to send them to a reform school, with strict, firm, and flexible supervision, only then can change be achieved. Punish them severely and strictly, warning stubborn students, both to their parents and the school. Be "strong" in some cases so that other students will be afraid and not dare to do anything.
Thoroughly reduce the curriculum, innovate testing and evaluation in a gentle direction, eliminate the widespread practice of extra teaching and learning, and eliminate excessive school fees. Build a happy - healthy - humane - progressive school. Focus on cultural activities, sports, reading, and life skills training; especially, train students to be polite, friendly, and tolerant. Develop a school culture with specific criteria, with lively and practical educational content, without cliches or formalities, and without the burden of competition, scores, and exams.
Educating students through teachers' example. Cultivating teachers' ethics must be the top policy of education. Good teachers will surely have good students. Each lecture is the teacher's heart to help students become good people, not to add or subtract knowledge.
Of course, the school in this journey always needs the cooperation of parents and the cooperation of society. The family should be disciplined, loving, responsible and work with teachers to educate their children.
Media and entertainment must be responsible when sharing information, producing films, photos, stories, etc. How can products be created that have educational content and limit violence?
The education sector must make a breakthrough with its state management function along with monitoring, inspection, and examination, closely following the grassroots, empathizing with teachers, students, and parents, and listening to everyone's opinions with a receptive spirit to be able to treat school violence.
