Ho Chi Minh City's Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted may be split into a specialized school and a joint junior high school-high school, according to the proposal of the Department of Education.

The information was shared by a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training on March 18. The Department said it had sent a report on this matter to the City People's Committee.

Specifically, the Department proposed to separate Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted into two independent schools from the next school year, including: Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted located in An Khanh Ward, Thu Duc City and Tran Dai Nghia Middle School - High School located in District 1.

Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School will be part of the specialized school system, while Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School will be a general school with many levels. Both schools are invested by the state and are public service units that partially cover their regular expenses.

Regarding the conversion roadmap, the Department proposes two phases.

For Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted: Phase 1 (from the 2024-2025 to 2026-2027 school years), the school will still enroll and train students in specialized classes, but maintain the previous non-specialized classes (grades 10-12). From the 2026-2027 school year onwards (phase 2), the school will only have specialized classes.

Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School will accept secondary school students from Tran Dai Nghia School, and will also recruit new students from both secondary and high schools.

Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted was established and enrolled students for junior high school and high school in 2000. After two years, the school was converted into a specialized school, with its main campus located in Ben Nghe ward, District 1 and its second campus in An Khanh ward, Thu Duc city.

The school currently has 62 classes at the secondary level with more than 2,170 students; 44 classes at the high school level (specialized and non-specialized) with about 1,360 students.

The change in the model of Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted originated from the Ministry of Education and Training's request to Hanoi to direct the enrollment of grade 6 students at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted in accordance with regulations, at the end of February. The reason is that the Law on Education stipulates that specialized schools only exist at the high school level. The model of junior high school in specialized schools is not covered by any legal regulations.

In a document sent to the Ministry of Education and Training on March 12, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee said it would change the model of Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted to comply with the law, but recommended allowing enrollment in grade 6 this year to avoid disruption.

Every year, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted enrolls more than 500 sixth graders through an English proficiency test. The number of applications to the school is about 3,000-4,000.
