On the afternoon of October 24, at the Presidential Palace, President Vo Van Thuong received Senior Lieutenant General Roberto Legra Sotolongo, member of the Party Central Committee, Chief of the General Staff, Deputy Minister of the Cuban Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, on the occasion of his working visit to Vietnam.

At the reception, President Vo Van Thuong said that this visit continues to be a vivid manifestation of the close ties and loyal affection between the two countries and the two armies of Vietnam and Cuba. The President pointed out that the visit takes place at a time of special significance in the context that the two countries have just celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Cuban Committee for Solidarity with South Vietnam (September 1963) - the predecessor of the Cuba - Vietnam Friendship Association, and the 50th anniversary of Fidel Castro's first visit to Vietnam and to the liberated zone of South Vietnam in Quang Tri (September 1973), with the famous saying: "For Vietnam, Cuba is willing to sacrifice its blood". President Vo Van Thuong believes that the visit and work in Vietnam of Senior Lieutenant General Roberto Legrá Sotolongo will be a great success, contributing to firmly consolidating the good relations and cooperation between Vietnam and Cuba.
Senior Lieutenant General Roberto Legrá Sotolongo shared his feelings, joy and honor to meet President Vo Van Thuong; affirmed that the Vietnam - Cuba solidarity is a special solidarity founded by President Ho Chi Minh and President Fidel Castro and has always been nurtured, preserved and developed by generations of leaders and people of the two countries.
Informing about the good results of the working sessions and talks between the delegation of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba and the leaders of the Ministry of National Defense of Vietnam, Senior Lieutenant General Roberto Legrá Sotolongo said that the two sides shared, discussed and agreed on areas of cooperation. Thereby, continuing to deepen the tradition of special friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Cuba.
President Vo Van Thuong emphasized that the people of Vietnam and Cuba have always been united, sharing difficulties in revolutionary stages; caring for and encouraging each other to overcome challenges. The President affirmed that the Party, State and people of Vietnam are happy with the special solidarity and the substantial development of Vietnam - Cuba cooperation in many fields. Although there were many difficulties before, during and after the recent global pandemic, the two sides still maintained regular exchanges of delegations at all levels and sectors. In particular, the two countries' Ministries of Defense have always maintained a close, close relationship, supporting each other in many fields, with practical and effective cooperation results.
To further promote the achieved results, President Vo Van Thuong suggested that, along with further strengthening high-level exchanges, the two sides should promote exchange and cooperation activities between the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense and the Cuban Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces. In the context of the complex world, the defense cooperation between the two countries is of great significance. The Party and State of Vietnam always create the best conditions for the Ministry of National Defense to coordinate, share and cooperate with the Cuban Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces in areas where both sides have the capacity and need to cooperate.

President Vo Van Thuong also proposed further promoting economic, trade and investment cooperation between the two countries, thereby creating an important material and logistical foundation for the task of building and defending the Fatherland of each country. The armies of the two countries need to share experiences in labor and increase production to train and foster officers and soldiers. This is one of the key tasks that the Vietnam People's Army has carried out very well in recent times.
Congratulating Cuba on successfully hosting the G77 and China Summit, President Vo Van Thuong stated that Vietnam always supports the just struggle of the Cuban people; at the same time, opposes the embargo policy on Cuba. The President expressed his hope that the people of the two countries will continue to unite more closely in the coming time to jointly build and protect the Fatherland.
Thanking Vietnam for always accompanying and supporting Cuba, Senior Lieutenant General Roberto Legrá Sotolongo affirmed: The Cuba - Vietnam solidarity is the most special in the world, a symbol of relations and cooperation of the era. Cuba always wishes to further strengthen relations and cooperation with Vietnam.
